Fairbanks Leads Own Stampede
15 Hit Barrage Downs Reds.

Fairbanks, AK (PSN) - Poor Jordy Mercer. He was the only Miner that didn't register a hit.

But eight others did, led by outfielders Andrew McCutchen and Ernie Heist with three, as the Miners rebounded from a Tough loss to spank the Cincinnatti Reds 8-4.

The 15 hits was a season high for the Miners. But manager W.Z. Nelson wasn't all smiles and rainbows.

"We didn't draw a fucking walk tonight. That's two times in a row. Inexcusable. I like the output but getting on base is the first half to the battle. Can't do that swinging at bad pitches, which we did eight times."

The Miners did hit six doubles and a monster home run from McCutchen, a 452 foot moon shot off of reliever Sam LeCure.

Don Drain continues to warmup as well, his two run double was a part four run fourth inning to tie the game up after Cincinnatti took a 4-0 lead on two run home runs from Jay Bruce and Ryan Ludwick.

Vladmir Petrov, finally at 100%, survived a rough first half of the game to pitch six innings to earn the win. He struck out seven and walked three. Gerrit Cole pitched the final three innings to get the old school save.

Santiago the Slayer
Underused 2B Delivers Game Winning Double to Aid Reds in Series Split.

Fairbanks, AK (PSN) - Ramon Santiago had 38 at bats prior to his start in the final game of the series with the Fairbanks Gold Miners.

He made the most of at bat number 42.

His two run double in the eighth inning off reliever Rog Patrick capped off a comeback to lead the Cincinnati Reds to a 6-5 win and a key split in the early inter divisional series.

Another bench savior was OF Skip Schumaker. His three run home run in the fifth inning off starter Nikolai Krause gave the Reds a 4-2 lead.

The Miners were handcuffed by Reds starter Homer Bailey for the most part. They again failed to register a walk, and brought out the Vladimir Guerrero bastard child shirts with their 10 strikeout performance. But Don Drain was one of the few bright spots for the Miners. He went four-for-four with two home runs, two doubles and four RBI.

Manager W.Z. Nelson was not available for comment, as he looked flabbergasted and irritated at his team. Not a good time to be the manager heading to St. Louis. The Cardinals hammered the Miners earlier in the season in a three game series by a combined 24-12.

News and Notes: Giant Sandwich Melendez was seen eating a new sandwich - a vegan sandwich. "The meatball spicy does disturbing things to stomach. hopefully this fixes my pitching too," Melendez said.

Miners Hammer Cards
Fairbanks Show No. Mercy in 9-1 Pummelling.

St. Louis, MO (PSN) - Fairbanks played the role of Herb Brooks. The St. Louis Cardinals were the Soviets.

After the Cardinals took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, the Miners battered and blasted St. Louis over the last seven innings en route to a 9-1 win.

Four Miners hit home runs. Seven drove in runs, led by catcher Teddy Sheridans two. Ernie Heist had three hits, two which were of the infield variety.

"This kind of game show what we are truly capable of," said manager W.Z. Nelson, "this was a complete game played by us tonight. First time in a long while we've done that. I think there was a little motivation behind this one."

Again, Robby Kloog was Cy Youngesque in his performance. He went 8 innings and allowed one run on five hits. He walked three and struck out eight. Dez Phillips pitched a scoreless ninth to finish the game.

Joe Kelly and Jaime Garcia each allowed four runs in their individual outings.

Huaranga the Hero
11th Inning Triple Aids in Extra Inning Win.

St. Louis, MO (PSN) - CRistobal Huaranga hasn't had much go right so far this season. That changed in one swing.

Huaranga delivered a lead off triple in the eleventh inning, and scored the game winning run on a sacrifice fly by Starling Marte to tip the Cardinals, 2-1.

What started as a promising game turned dramatic very quickly. Miner pitcher Jimmy Partee was shredding Cardinal hitters. He struck out 11 over eight innings, but allowed a game tying solo home run from Jhonny Peralta to start off the ninth inning.

Meanwhile, Cardinal hurler Pat Neshek returned the strikeout favor by notching six of his own after the Miners chased Cardinal starter Tyler Lyons. Between the two teams, they both struck out 32 times.

Miner reliever Rog Patrick stabilized the ball game with two innings of no-hit ball. Giant Sandwich Melendez returned from his hiatus and new vegan sandwich routine notched a 1-2-3 inning with two strikeouts to get his sixth save.

Masterful Marte
Three Hits, 3 RBI for LF Leads Miners to Convincing Sweep.

St. Louis, MO (PSN) - Fairbanks wanted to leave no doubt in the St. Louis Cardinals in this series that there was a second horse in the NL Central race.

They accomplished that and then some.

The Miners completed the sweep by hammering Cardinal ace Adam Wainwright for six runs and seven hits in two innings, and cruised to a 10-2 win.

With the sweep, the Miners took over sole possession of the division with a 14-12 record.

Starling Marte had three hits and drove in three with a three run home run in the second inning. He and Ernie Heist also stole bases.

Teddy Sheridan also drove in three runs with a long home run and a double. Zech Renfro had three hits and scored twice in a rare start due to the return of regular 3B Pedro Alvarez.

"I told you guys we have a groove going here. We played really well this entire series," said manager W.Z. Nelson, "but now we need to maintain the momentum we've established here to create some distance. The other teams in our division are dangerous, but space creates some ease amongst the team. We can go play games with no pressure."

MLB Network rank the Fairbanks Gold Miners by position:

Catcher (A) Teddy Sheridan has been as good as advertised and then some. Add in the return of Russell Martin for depth, and it's a great 1-2 punch.

1B (B+) Don Drain has been a bit inconsistent, but has turned it up as of late with some gap power.

2B (C-) Song Dong Yong has had a few moments, but not what was expected for the North Korean All Star.

SS (B+) Charles Johnson fits the same mold as Don Drain. He started slow, but a hot stretch the middle of April pushed his batting average above .300.

3B (A-) A pleasant surprise, Zech Renfro has delivered some clutch hits. Just like at catcher, Renfro has quality depth with Pedro Alvarez behind him.

OF (C) A lot were expected from Roger Murdoch and Cristobal Huaranga. While Murdoch has had a few moments, Huranaga has struggled mightily in the transition to MLB. It may service Huaranga so e time in the minors to get things figured out. Thank goodness Starling Marte and Andrew McCutchen have picked up the slack. Ernie Heist has been awesome on the base paths....when he gets there.

SP (B+) The rotation has had extreme highs (16 strikeouts) and extreme lows (16 walks). Lately, it's been one of the best rotations in baseball, averaging 8 strikeouts per start. Robby Kloog has been Cy Young caliber from day one. Vladmir Petrov is starting to show some spark from his time in Russia, while veteran ace Dave Johnson still is fighting consistency problems with his knuckleball.

RP (B) Giant Sandwich Melendez has changed windups and sandwiches, and it seems things are on the right track now. For now that is.

Miners Sweep Os
Pitching Shuts Down Anemic Baltimore Offense in Twinbill Sweep.

Baltimore, MD (PSN) - This is the pitching staff Fairbanks manager W.Z. Nelson imagined having.

The Miners, who lead all of baseball in strikeouts, took full advantage of an underperforming Baltimore offense and swept a doubleheader by the final scores of 4-1 and 3-0.

Game One saw the Story of two different teams swap roles. Baltimore had ten hits and had runners on base in every inning. But Fairbanks managed hits that scored runs. Starling Marte and Teddy Sheridan each hit solo home runs, while Roger Murdoch had a two run shot. All home runs were hit off of losing pitcher Miguel Gonzalez.

Vladmir Petrov finally shook off the home sickness and had his best performance as a Miner. He allowed eight hits but just one run. He struck out nine and did not allow a walk.

The reliever battery of Mark Melancon, Tony Watson and Giant Sandwich Melendez each tossed one inning of relief to pin down the win.

Game Two saw more of the same weak offense from Baltimore. However, Fairbanks didn't do much until 3B Zech Renfro hit an opposite field two run home run in the eighth inning. Teddy Sheridan delivered a pinch hit single to cap off the inning.

Nikolai Krause also enjoyed his best outing as a Miner, tossing eight shutout innings. He walked two and struck out 11. Melendez came on in the ninth inning to earn his eighth save.

Dong is Dandy
Koreans Three Hits Lead Miners To 5-3 Win.

Fairbanks, AK (PSN) - Song Dong Yong has experienced some success since transferring to the states. Not quite like this, though.

His three hits, including a long home run, was the decisive hit as the Fairbanks Gold Miners knocked off the Toronto Blue Jays in the Igloo Series 5-3.

Teddy Sheridan and Pedro Alvarez also homered for the Miners, who raises their record to 17-12 with the win.

The Miners had to actually put up some runs, which was odd knowing their best pitcher, Robby Kloog, took the mound. He struggled through 5 and 1/3 innings, allowing eight hits and four walks. But those didn't pay dividends as the Jays were only able to scratch just one run across.

Gerrit Cole came on and tossed 2 and 2/3 innings of relief, allowing just three hits. GIant Sandwich Melendez continues to regroup and pitch well, just allowing a solo home run to Edwin Encarnacion before notching his ninth save.

Notes: Cristobal Huaranga was sent back to triple A to work on his swing. "Poor lad hasn't picked up the speed of the game," said manager W.Z. Nelson, "plus he needs to get consistent at bats to fix what is ailing his swing."

Miners Take Igloo Series
Doubleheader Split Notches Fairbanks Series Win Over Toronto.

Fairbanks, AK (PSN) - Fairbanks seems pretty glad and lucky that Toronto is leaving the confines of the ASS.

Edwin Encarnacion killed the Miners in each game, but Fairbanks survived barely to win two out of three games to win the season series two games to one.

In last nights doubleheader, Encarnacion accounted for Toronto's offense with a solo home run, and a clutch two run double in the tenth inning to win game one, 3-2.

Zech Renfro continued to swing a hot bat, as his solo home run gave the Miners an early 1-0 lead. But then RA Dickey shut the Miners down over the next six innings, striking out nine and allowing just four hits.

After Encaranacions double in the tenth inning, the Miners rallied with a lead off triple from Ernie Heist. He then scored on a sacrifice fly by Starling Marte. After drawing walks from Charles Johnson and Andrew McCutchen, Blue Jay reliever Sergio Santos got Teddy Sheridan to ground into a 6-4-3 double play to seal the win.

Game Two saw more heroics, but this time from the Miners. Encarnacion blasted two home runs including a clutch solo home run off Rog Patrick in the ninth to gain the lead briefly.

Sheridan responded with his 10th home run, a solo home run off Casey Janssen. Then Starling Marte, in the tenth inning, doubled off of Janssen to begin the inning. Renfro sealed the game two win with a solid single.

Yet Another Split
Miners Battle San Francisco to a Draw in Pair of Games.

Fairbanks, AK (PSN) - When looking at this series between the Giants and Miners started, Serta beds would have been a quality sponsor. And so far, it has been a snoozer of a series.

Meanwhile, Pitching has been the mantra for the San Francisco Giants and Fairbanks Miners. The teams split the first two games of the series by the scores of 3-1 and 3-0.

Giants Take Game One
Matt Cain out dueled Russian phenom Vladmir Petrov despite Cain allowing four more hits than Petrov.

"Walks absolutely killed Vlad in Game One," said manager W.Z. Nelson, "I bet he felt like it was the Cuban Missile Crisis. A lot of banging but he also skirted around quite a bit. And just like JFK, he was passive and let the Giants off the hook."

Petrov allowed just four hits but the three runs were the factor. He struck out nine batters but also walked seven in eight plus innings.

Roger Murdoch had two hits and an RBI to lead the Miners.

A two two run single by Marco Scutaro in the fifth inning would prove to be the deciding deficit in the first game.

King Krause

Nikolai Krause steamrolled the Giants in Game Two, pitching a complete game shutout. He struck out eight batters and allowed just four hits and one walk.

"Nikki was nails today," said Nelson, "he had it all working and was damn near untouchable."

The MIners scratched out single tallies in fourth, sixth and eighth innings to win Game Two 3-0. Pedro Alvarez led a barrage of Miner hitters with two hits and 2 RBI. Russell Martin, Andrew McCutchen and Charles Johnson also had two hits.

Damn Cards!
St Louis Enacts Revenge With Doubleheader Domination.

Fairbanks, AK (PSN) - Fairbanks pummeled the St Louis Cardinals two weeks ago in a three game sweep.

St Louis returned to Fairbanks and is two thirds the way to returning the favor.

After yet another game lost due to a moose stampede in the ASS, the Cardinals pounded the Miners in a double header, winning 12-9 and 7-2.

Game One proved to be a combination of atrocious pitching and dramatics.

Roger Murdoch hit a two out, two strike solo home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie the game at five. Murdoch led the Miner offense with three hits and four RBI.

Each team scored three runs in the tenth inning before the fatal blow came the following inning, as Matt Adams hit a three run home run off Miner reliever Roger Patrick would prove to be the decisive blow. Adams homered twice and drove in six runs to lead the Cardinals in Game One.

Game Two saw much less dramatics, as Cardinal pitcher Michael Wacha tossed eight quality innings, allowing just two runs on ten hits. He walked no one and struck out eight.

Jon Jay, Mark Ellis and Adams homered in Game Two off of starter Dave Johnson. Johnson allowed all seven runs on 10 hits in seven innings pitched.

Ernie Heist, Starling Marte and Teddy Sheridan each had two hits to lead the Miner offense in Game Two.

Unclogged Drain
Drains Three Hits Salvage Final Game of Series.

Fairbanks, AK (PSN) - Don Drain seems to have it going on, as he would say.

Drain has steadily improved his overall game, then busted out in the final game of the series with the St Louis Cardinals with a perfect 3-for-3 day to lead the Fairbanks Gold Miners to a 3-2 win.

His solo home run in the seventh inning was the decisive blow off of reliever Randy Choate.

Charles Johnson and Teddy Sheridan each drove in runs to aid in the Miner victory.

After a usual start from Russian phenom Vladimir Petrov, long reliever Gerrit Cole slammed the door on the Carsinal offense, by not allowing a hit over 2 and one third innings.

Giant Sandwich Melendez pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to notch his 10 save in 13 chances.

Brewing Up A Storm
Miners Dominate Milwaukee Twin Bill.

Milwaukee, WI (PSN) - The Fairbanks Gold Miners are a little angry after losing two of three to the St Louis Cardinals.

The best elixir: the division leader.

The Miners hammered The Brewers' statistically best pitcher, Marco Estrada in game one, and continued the barrage in Game Two off of Wily Peralta with ten more hits to win both games of a doubleheader, 6-1 and 8-4.

The Miners were forced into another double header after their flight was postponed due to a forest fire near the Fairbanks airport.

The extra day seemed to do the Miners a lot of favors on both sides of the baseball, especially Teddy Sheridan and Don Drain. Drain hit three home runs in the doubleheader, while Sheridan notched six hits and three RBIs.

But out the spot light ended up on another retread, OF Roger Murdoch. Murdoch, a week removed from being sent to Triple A, homered in Game One and had four hits of his own to spike his average up to .249. His average was hiding in the upper 190s before this latest stretch.

With the blistering offense came lightning in a bottle pitching by Robby Kloog, Jimmy Partee and Giant Sandwich Melendez. Kloog and Partee each pitched six plus innings and allowed under three earned runs. Melendez pitched one inning in each game, striking out the side in each outing.

"We feel pretty good about things right now," said manager W.Z. Nelson.

Superman Starling
Martes 10th Inning Homer Sweeps Brew Crew.

Milwaukee, WI (PSN) - Starling Marte had fallen on some skids at the plate. An o-fer stretch dipped his batting average to the 230s.

But in what was a tough ball game across the board, not much hitting and a whole lot of pitching, the veterans came in the clutch.

Deadlocked at zeroes, Marte hit a Brandon Kintzler fastball just enough over the left center field wall for a solo home run to lead the Miners to a 1-0 win, and more importantly, a three game sweep of the then division leader.

Marte and Andrew McCutchen each had two hits to lead the Miners.

The Miners got a stellar pitching outing from starter Nikolai Krause, throwing seven innings of shut out baseball. After reliever Justin Wilson tossed two more innings, Giant Sandwich Melendez struck out the side to earn his 12 save in 15 chances.

Kuroda Croaks Miners
Yankees Notch 10 Hits in 4-1 Win.

The Bronx, NY (PSN) - Hideki Kuroda is really a 38 year old veteran. He pitched like he was 22.

The Japanese import brought his eephus pitch, slider and overall A game that baffled the hot Fairbanks Gold Miner bats, throwing eight solid innings to lead the New York Yankees to a 4-1 win to start a three game series.

"Da hell pitcher was that?" Questioned manager W.Z. Nelson after the game, "some of that junk that Jap threw was confusing. And our hitters never had seen anything like it. We might as well just tried bunting to get on base. Probably would have had better luck."

The Miners scored their only run on a solo home run by Pedro Alvarez in the fifth inning. Other than another Alvarez hit and a Teddy Sheridan double, the Miners did nothing on offense.

The Miners received a decent start from ace Dave Johnson. The issue was he gave up four runs. "Dave was alright. He was really good in the first five, but the sixth got away from him. They have good veteran bats that will hurt you if you let them. Which they did."

Johnson pitched into the sixth, and actually had a no hitter going. But back to back singles by Carlos Beltran and Mark Teixieria began the slide. The fatal blow was a two run double by catcher Brian McCann later on in the inning.

After Kurodas quality start, Shawn Kelley pitched a 1-2-3 scoreless ninth to earn the save.

Russian Fireballer Ks 15 in Miner Win.

The Bronx, NY (PSN) - Vladimir Petrov always flashed an electric fastball. But his head would get in the way of his true potential.

May 17, 2014 might be the date Petrov puts in the memory bank.

The Russian Flame thrower set a career high and set a Fairbanks Gold Miner record with 15 strikeouts over eight innings pitched to lead the Miners to a 4-2 win over the New York Yankees.

"That is the VLad that we have expected to see since he landed from Vladivostok," said manager W.Z. Nelson, "the guy was downright dirty. Many of his pitches were just downright unhittable."

Petrov struck out the side in the third, fifth and sixth innings. The Russian product allowed an RBI double from Brendan Ryan and four other hits. He walked just two batters.

Lost in Petrovs performance was the offensive eruption of 1B Don Drain. He homered twice and drove in three runs to lead the Miner offense. Ernie Heist had two doubles to help in the win for the Miners.

Krause Etches Name in Miner Record Books With First No Hitter.

The Bronx, NY (PSN) - Nikoli Krause has lived somewhat a similar saga like his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Petrov.

Krause just wrote the best chapter of his saga ever, up to this point.

The right hander marched into Yankee Stadium and tossed the first no hitter in franchise history in a 6-0 win. The only stat that prevented a perfect game was a walk in the fifth inning to Mark Teixieria.

"This trumps Vlads performance yesterday," said manager W.Z. Nelson, "just lights out from start to finish. Unbelievable."

Krause needed 118 pitches to complete the no hitter. He struck out six.

The Miner offense staked Krause to a 5-0 lead by the fourth inning with two run home runs from Starling Marte and Andrew McCutchen. Roger Murdoch drove in two runs with a ringing double.

Song Dong Yong dropped an exclamation point on the game with a 450 foot home run in the ninth inning.

Kloog Not Kool
Miners Drop 7-4 Decision to Baltimore.

Fairbanks, AK (PSN) - Baseball is a quirky sport, a sport of highs and lows.

For pitcher Robby Kloog, the first six weeks of the 2014 season have been much higher than what was expected.

Baltimore brought him back to Earth.

Kloog only lasted four innings and allowed four runs on eight hits and took the loss in a 7-4 decision to the Baltimore Orioles. "Robby didn't locate consistently tonight," said manager WZ Nelson, "and they made him pay when he didn't locate."

A three run home run by Manny Machado in the second inning started the abysmal night for Kloog. Then it turned worse with four consecutive hits by the Orioles in the fourth to end his night early. The Orioles enjoyed an off night from Miner pitching, smashing 12 hits.

JJ Hardy also homered for the Orioles.

The Miners tried to fight back with a 13 hit arsenal of their own. Song Dong Yong had three hits, while Roger Murdoch homered again and drove in a pair to lead the offense.

Miners Walk It Off
Sandwich Blows, Pedro Saves in 4-3 Win.

Fairbanks, AK (PSN) - Sandwich Melendez is thanking his lucky stars. And that stars name is Pedro Alvarez.

After Melendez blew a save opportunity on a pinch hit two run home run by JJ Hardy, Pedro Alvarez returned the favor with a two out, two strike 455 foot bomb to earn the brief two game split with Baltimore, 4-3.

"Yeah, the sandwich was a bit tainted tonight. He left one in Hardys wheelhouse and he smashed it," said manager WZ Nelson.

But Alvarez and Teddy Sheridan saved the Miners from what could had been a bad sweep. Sheridan went 4-for-4 with two doubles to raise his season average to .325 on the season. "His 12 pitch at bat in the ninth was awesome," said Nelson, "he fought off some brutal pitches, then got his and nailed it."

That said the stage for Alvarez, who has embraced his return to the then Pirate now Miner organization. "We won in Pittsburgh, who says we cannot win here in The ASS?"

Russell Martin and Ernie Heist also had two hits to lead the Miner efforts.

Nats Split
Miner Pitchers Masterful Except for One Petrov Pitch.

Fairbanks, AK (PSN) - THe coming series with the NL East leader Washington Nationals is huge for confidence and competition.

If the last two games go as well as the first two, this 2014 season is shaping up to be awesome.

The Miners received superb pitching performances from starters Dave Johnson and Vladimir Petrov, but earned a split in the doubleheader, winning Game One 6-1 but losing Game Two 4-3.

Game One saw vintage Dave Johnson shut down a National offense. He went seven strong innings, allowing just a Jayson Worth solo home run and three other hits. He struck out a season high nine while just walking one.

Andrew McCutchen homered and drove in a pair of runs as the Miners peppered the Nationals pitching staff for 12 hits.

Cristobal Huranaga returned to the major league team and had a pair of hits including his third home run.

Mark Melancon pitched the final two innings to earn the save in relief.

Game Two was another blistering performance from Miner starter Vladimir Petrov. He struck out another 13 batters.

However, he ended up as the losing pitcher as Anthony Rendon hit a line drive three run home run in the sixth inning.

Denard Span collected three hits and a stolen base to lead the Nats to the heart breaking 4-3 win.

The Miners were handcuffed by Nats starter Doug Fister in ASS. They only managed five hits, two each from Don Drain and Zech Renfro and a single by Ernie Heist.

Gold Miners Start Strong
Fairbanks Return With Red Sweep.

What a difference a year makes. After a 2014 season shut down due to union arguments in which the Fairbanks Gold Miners would have won the NL Central, they look to finish the job. They are off to a good start.

The Miners swept the Cincinnati Reds, winning 4-0 in game one, then unloading in a 11-3 romp in Game 2.

in Game one, Gregor Polanco broke open a tight game with a two run home run in the sixth inning. Andrew McCutchen had two hits to aid the cause in game one. Ace Gerrit Cole went the distance in the shutout win. Song Dong Yong walked twice, and Charles Johnson had a free pass as well.

Game Two saw the Miners hammer the Reds for 3 runs in the 4th, and 4 more in the 5th inning. Dong Yong doubled and tripled and drove in four runs while Josh Harrison and Teddy Sheridan each hit two run home runs. However, the Miners lost Francisco Liriano to a severe finger laceration taking a line drive off the right index finger. He will be placed on the 15-day DL. Dave Johnson will be expected to take his spot in the rotation.
