Game 36 - Montpellier (H) - Win 3-1 (French Cup Quarterfinals)

With a lot of my starting players still tired from the win against Marseille just 3 days ago, and my desire to really focus on winning a Champions League spot, I decided to start a few backups for my French Cup match against Montpellier. I started a solid enough team to compete, but rested anyone who was below 90 fitness (Ferret, Oliviera, and Diarra). I figured if I got a win it would be nice, but if I didn't win I'd just have fewer matches down the stretch to distract me from my #1 goal of that champions league spot. Fortunately I was able to take a 3-0 lead early in the second half, so I was also able to work in all 3 subs for players who were tired. What a perfect result from a cup game. I was able to win the game while keeping the bulk of my squad well rested. Romero looked great as Oliviera's replacement, grabbing 2 goals. I believe this was his first multiple goal game of the season. I used those "counter attacking" tactics again and was able to score 2 of the goals on fast breaks.

On to the French Cup Sem-Finals against Lyon. I also checked my remaining ligue 1 schedule, and the last 8 games feature matches against PSG (#1), Lorient (#2), Lyon(#5 With the cup game I have to play them twice), and the struggling but talent loaded Monaco, along with a couple of other top half teams. I'm in a good position, but with the meat of the schedule left I don't want to count any chickens before they've hatched. Depending on when the cup game falls in the schedule, I might have to use reserves only in that match in an attempt to make my push for the league goal. We shall see.

One thing I've been starting to do is to evaluate talent/needs for next year. I've listed a bunch of the reserve/lower talent and potential players that I don't have plans for, and started to see if there will be any glaring holes. One hole I've identified already will be at the CB position where I only have 2 starting caliber players (and Armand is getting long in the tooth at that). I have some great youth prospects, but they probably aren't ready to be rotational players with the first team next year. The only player who bridges that gap as a rotational player on the current squad is John Boye. The problem with John Boye going forward is three-fold. 1) He's already reached his 2 star potential, 2) He is a bad 2 star player, as he's been a big liability every time I've played him in the rotation, and 3) His contract was up this year and he wanted 20k/week as a new contract (he currently is making 12.5k/week). With the wage structure that I'm trying to stick to, a rotational player should only be making 7.5-15k/week, so there is no way I'm going to sign John Boye going forward with his high wage demands and low potential.

So anyway, I've been scouting CBs with expiring contracts, looking for the perfect replacement. I've already got good youth prospects coming up, so I don't want to overpay for potential, I just want a player to bridge the gap between 35 year old Armand and the under 19 year old prospects. Anyway, I found this dude, Molla Wague, who is interested in playing for Stade Rennais, has 2.5 star current ability, and 4 star potential. He's already got pretty solid CB stats, other than determination (I'll get Armand to tutor him maybe, since Armand's determination is high). So I offered him a contract at 12k/week (cheaper than I'm currently paying Boye!). We have a tentative agreement to terms, but I'm still waiting on official confirmation. If I can lure him away from his current club, I'll make a significant upgrade, while saving $500/wk in salary costs, without paying any transfer fees. The only possible hitch is that he insisted on a salary bump clause based on international appearance of 5 caps giving him a bump to 20k/week. He has 0 caps now, but I figure I can sell him later if his salary ends up getting out of whack with my wage structure (20k would be fine for a starter if he ends up replacing armand). He switched his allegiance from France to Mali at some point, but still has 0 appearances for Mali, so hopefully he doesn't get those 5 caps

Molla Wague
14602037085_f123992492_b.jpg

I was scrolling through players and I saw him mean muggin in his picture and then I saw the 6'3 187lbs and solid physical stats (His stats actually look even better if I play him in a stopper role). He fits the Mr. Manager Athlete mold! I also love how he apparently fancies himself to be something of a striker

How did Valbuena get injured, you might ask? Mr. Manager is rumored to have encountered him at a party last weekend... Valbuena was just minding his own business, playing polish horseshoes, when Mr. Manager decided to seize the opportunity. Fortunately, a paparazzi caught the whole thing on film and we finally have the answer for the Size vs Technique debate. @chibob

Valbuena is out for the season with a broken spine.

Size doesnt bother me.

If you two are done playing tummy sticks, I'm going to post an update:

Game 37 - Bastia (H) - Win 2-0

Home game against the last place team in the league... no problem, right? This game had me sweating bullets as it was still a 0-0 draw late in the game. I switched all tactics to "overload" in desperate search of three points, and was rewarded when Oliviera notched his first in the 76th minute. LAWD.

Random Notes on April 1st:

Mr. Manager told the team he was quitting today and stormed out of the building while imploring the management board to go "fuck an apple." Apparently April Fool's day is not a thing in France, and the media and Stade Rennais board panicked.

14627235573_7238764d15_b.jpg

Here is the April Calender, showing several big games... I actually love how the cup match fit in with plenty of rest.
14420797137_02366da939_b.jpg

Here is where Oliviera gets robbed on the player of the month award. I think a midfielder with 1 goal and an average match rating of 7.6 in 5 games totally deserves the player of the month award over the striker who scored 7 goals in 4 games and averaged an 8.52 rating (plus scored a hat-trick in a HUGE win against a top tier team). HMMMMMMMMMM

14607188195_eac33659ec_b.jpg

Stade Rennais Lock up the services of Molla Wague, contract starting at 12k/week in July, 2014. YES. Even after paying agent fees and shit, I've upgraded a player for essentially the same exact price I was paying for John Boye (the 500/week difference basically equaled the agent fees). Now I have a better player with more potential. This was a key area of need, so I'm glad I locked it up early to leave more room during the actual transfer season.

Due to the April Fool's hoax misunderstanding, the Stade Rennais board decided to attempt to lock Mr. Manager down for 2 more years. With your team currently battling for a champion's league spot, and poised to play in the semifinal for the French Cup, lets go ahead and add some more potential drama to the mix... WTF?

Even more frustrating, they give me a completely fucked offer:
14420793517_9b16814d40_b.jpg

For Context, that would only be a 10% raise in my own salary and zero increase in Transfer Budget/Payroll over what they are currently sitting at.... BUT I would have to deal with the higher expectations of competing for the Euro Cup qualification? So literally you want to give me higher expectations without the necessary financial support to accomplish them? Mr. Manager told the board "I'm disappointed in your manners... if you are going to fuck a guy in the ass, at least have the goddamn common courtesy to give him a reach around!" Mr. Manager asked to delay these ludicrous talks until the end of the season.

Assuming you do make the champs league, hold off on resigning until the end of the year - you'll get moar money.

Although you wouldn't get an increase in wage/transfer budget yet, since those numbers are already set. You won't get the new numbers until after the season is over. So basically they are just locking you in at two more years with a 10% raise (expectations change every year, you don't get one expectation that covers ur whole contract).

Game 38 - Bordeaux (A) - Draw 1-1

This game had trap written all over it. Bordeaux are a very quality team, who were sitting in 7th place and play well at home. Add in Mr. Manager's distracted mood about the contract negotiations, plus 3 key players missing the match due to suspension from yellow card accumulation (Makoun, Diara, Danze), and this game was a recipe for disaster. Stade Rennais actually came out hot and pretty much dominated the game, but were only able to escape with a 1-1 draw after substitute Gassama put the ball in his own net during a FIFA-esque shit clearance of a ground cross. Stade Rennais honestly had several opportunities that they should have buried, especially Pitropia. The fast break counter tactics were still "working" but players like Pitropia and Pajot just struggled to finish when they were 1 on 1 with the GK. All things considered, I'm happy to have a point from a dangerous game, but we're going to have to do better down the stretch in order to hold on to the Champions league spot.

Game 39 - Monaco (H) - Loss 1-2 FFUUUUU

This game was maddening. Got the first goal and felt confident about my team punching from the counter attack position. Then Monaco bumble fucked their way to a goal in the 50th minute.... Then they got the game winner in the 75th when my defense failed to clear a corner well and they worked the ball up for a short cross to the CB who was still hanging around. CB JOINS ATTACK! This was the most crushing defeat of the season so far, and we are barely hanging on to a 2 point lead for the Champions League spot. With the hardest games left to come, dropping 5 points in the last 2 games is NOT what I planned on.

Game 40 - Lyon(H) - Win 1-0 Stade Rennais are French Cup Semi-Final Winners. ON TO THE FINALS!

Well, I wasn't going to give a shit about the French Cup, but most of my players were decently fit, so I started most of the usual cast. I did put Romero in at Striker for Oliviera and Baird in at CDM for Diarra. Unfortunately, Romero was injured in the first half so I had to put Oliviera on. He scored the game winner and we are on to the FINALS where we play AC Ajaccio (who are currently second to last place in Ligue 1). I never really figured I had a chance to win this thing, but now I'll be pretty pissed if we don't!

Unfortunately for me, Romero's injury was season ending, so his loan was ended early. Now I'm down to Oliviera and an 18 year old 1-star current ability striker! HMMMMMMMM Just when I needed to not have any striker depth.

Game 41 - St Ettiene (A) - Win 1-0

This was a big win to hold on to the last champions league spot for one more week. LAWD. Only 4 games left (see update below)

14423400940_93f423d60b_b.jpg

14423400890_4922ae8fce_b.jpg

With only 4 games remaining, FC Lorient, Stade Rennais, and Marseilles are only separated by 3 total points and must battle for the remaining 2 Champions League spots (PSG has one spot pretty much locked). In addition, Lyon has an outside shot at securing a Champions League spot since they play both Lorient and Marseilles in their remaining games. Stade Rennais have the most difficult remaining schedule, as the must play Lorient and PSG in the next 2 games before finishing the season against Sochaux and Stade De Reims. Lorient also have a tough schedule playing both Lyon and Stade Rennais. Marseilles have arguably the easiest remaining schedule, with the game against Lyon being their toughest test (but they get them at home).

The game featuring Stade Rennais and Lorient will very likely allow Marseilles to jump back into a Champions League spot, no matter what the result. A loss for either Stade Rennais or Lorient will place that team in a terrible position, while a win will give an important leg up. The rest of the season could hinge on this all important game for those teams seeking the Champions League spots!

Mr. Manager is so fired up about this all important game and he's going to record live commentary of the game on his lunch break and upload it later tonight! Stade Rennais will play the #2 team and the #1 team in the next two weeks in order to fight for their Champions League spot! LAWD what a thrilling conclusion to the season (and that's not even mentioning the French Cup final!)

Game 42 - Lorient (H) - WIN 4-1 TAKE UR SHIRT OFF!

This was just an awesome game. I switched up my tactics a bit, based on the scouting report for Lorient showing that they struggled against a 4-2DM-1-2-1 formation. It was a bit of a gamble to add a "new" formation this late, but my familiarity was still relatively high because it is similar to a 4-2-3-1. It really paid off in the end, even though the first half was close the route really was on in the second half. Pajot, The Ferret, and Oliviera were all absolutely world class in this game.

This win put Mr. Manager and Stade Rennais in 2nd place in Ligue 1 with 3 games remaining in a very tight race. They play PSG next with no real room for error with only a 2 point lead over both Lorient and Marseille. Fortunately the tie breakers go my way still, so if I can pull off so much as a draw against PSG I can still control my own destiny. If I lose to PSG, I need one of Lorient/Marseille to lose or draw at least one of their remaining games. Tension is high, but I'm in a great spot now thanks to this huge victory! I forgot to get a screenshot of the "match summary" so I pulled a couple of screenshots that should show the same thing. I hope you enjoy the match commentary, as I swear at Pitropia several times before pulling his ass at halftime. The only bad news was that Tony Danze went down for the rest of the season :( adding to the pile of injuries as the team limps to the finish. Next up is another huge game against PSG who have already locked up the league title, so I hope they are complacent!

Game 43 - PSG(A) - WIN 2-1 HO-LEE-FUK!

The situation called for playing really conservative and trying for a draw against PSG away from home, but Mr. Manager sensed that they might have been complacent, having just secured the league title, so he came out with a balls to the walls overload tactic... and it worked horribly as PSG scored first

Fortunately, with nothing to lose, the overload tactic stayed on and Stade Rennais managed to score 2 goals and then hold off the onslaught from an angry Goliath as we held on for an epic win! We actually swept PSG this year, amazing. With that win, and a loss by Marseille, We've got a 5 point lead (and the tie breaker) on them. The chickens aren't counted yet, but Mr. Manager has busted out his abacus.

What an awesome game this was! And now the team has the French Cup final in another 2 days. LAWD what a week. Nelson Oliviera was also awarded player of the month.

Game 44 - MR. MANAGER AND STADE RENNAIS WIN FRENCH CUP OVER AJACCIO!!! 1-0

The stats of this game were all Stade Rennais, but somehow I still felt like we were going to lose in some stupid way. Their goalie made some unbelievable saves and then my defenders clusterfucked the ball right to their striker who was free on goal, but Costil saved the day with his own amazing save. They had a couple more chances that made me poop a little, but as the last few minutes rolled around they seemed to tire out and my guys were able to control the game and almost pick up a 2nd, but for some more great goalkeeping. Really an impressive performance from a team who just got relegated form Ligue 1, lol.

Everyone happy!

Game 45 - Sochaux (H) - Win 3-0 Mr. Manager and Stade Rennais Secure #2 spot in Ligue 1 and Champions league berth with 1 game remaining!

With this win and the fact that FC Lorient lost, Stade Rennais are now officially 5 points ahead of the nearest contender, with only one game to play, locking up the #2 spot in Ligue1. Nelson Oliviera snagged his 30th goal of the year (and 31st) in a heroic performance. Mr. Manager subbed on 3 youngsters in the second half and Konradson picked up a goal of his own, on a movement that was started by a key pass from Ntep. In their last match, Stade Rennais plan to field a young team while the vets rest their weary legs. What a season. Now that he's been labeled a "Mastermind," The question remains; will Mr. Manager stay at Stade Rennais, or will he take his talents to South Beach?

I honestly don't know how I ended up at #2 other than the fact that I was all the way down at #10 after 20 games. Then I tweaked some of my tactics around and Oliviera started scoring at least a goal per game it seemed and I think I only lost 3 games in 26 after that point. This game seems to model "streakiness" pretty well, but just when it looked like everything was about to fall apart again I hit the easiest stretch of games all season and was barely winning over shit teams... and by the time I had to play hard teams again, confidence was back up?

In May of 2006, armed only with a glittering virtual career on Football Manager 2005 and limited success in charge of a local under-11s team, then-25-year-old John Boileau made the leap and applied — with tongue firmly in cheek — to become the new manager of Middlesbrough Football Club. Below are his covering letter and CV as sent to the club's chairman and owner, multi-millionaire Steve Gibson. Also below is Gibson's fantastic response.

I think I need to turn the in game volume down or something, because I have the mic volume all the way up (but that appears to make the game sounds super loud too). I'll do some tests and figure it out, as it only seems to be a problem with this game.

Game 46 - Stade Reims (A) - Win 2-1

My plan to play all youngins was somewhat thwarted by the fact that a few of the U19 dudes were away on international duty. Anyway, I started a younger lineup and they didn't start off all that well. Fortunately, I used the "rip new asshole" button at halftime and it got their attention, so they won this virtual exhibition game 2-1. And with that the first season of Mr. Manager ends. I'll make a season review post to include some TOTY info and player awards.

2013-2014 End of Season Review - Financial Developments and Mr. Manager's decision to stay with Stade Rennais.

The Stade Rennais board engaged in quite a game of brinksmanship, only offering Mr. Manager a paltry 650k transfer budget all the way until June. Eventually as Mr. Manager started to look for other jobs, the board pulled out the checkbook and offered a transfer budget of a little over 9 million dollars. Mr. Manager then decided to Stick with Stade Rennais until 2017. Stade Rennais were also awarded over 20 million dollars for their place in Ligue 1, which helped them emerge from the season profitable. The board's end of season Review for Mr. Manager was also glowing.

2013-2014 End of Season Review - Player and Team Performance Wrap up and Final League Standings

Nelson Oliviera was the MVP for the first team, due in large part to his terrific goal scoring record in the last half of the season. As of the 30 game review, Oliviera had scored 16 goals in 26 appearances. By the end of the season, he'd scored 31 goals in 38 appearances, meaning he scored 1.25 goals per game during the most important stretch of the season. It is hard to lose the absolute best player in the team as his loan expires. Other notable players included THE FERRET who was a steady veteran hand all season long, defensive stalwart Kana-Biyik, and all-around great performer Tony Danze. Young midfielders Konradson and Pajot also performed well during the stretch run when injuries and suspensions forced them into the first time. All things considered, both Pitropia and Toivonen were disappointing, considering their stats/potential. Toivonen really started to find his spot, but was eliminated from the key part of the season by a 3 month injury. Pitropia showed flashes of brilliance, but was the most inconsistent player on the team. The lowest rated regular starter was Romaine Lettuce, who played well for one streak in the middle of the season, but was otherwise not contributing as much as he should have.

For the Reserve team, Ntep was the MVP. He also played fairly well in spot duty with the first team, but he showed that he can be a real goal scoring threat with the reserves. Expect to see big things from him next season. Anouar El Guennouni, Pierre Lemonnier, and Cedric Hountondji were also consistent reserve team players all season.

The under 19 team spent most of the year undermanned with "grey players," only to find their roster filled out in March with youth prospects. Ousmane Dembele was the MVP of the U19 team, for his overall contribution to the score sheet through both assists and goals. Other notable performers included Kevin Bercot and Thibault chretien. Several of the youth prospects brok into the team for a few appearances near the end of the season and performed very well, so I look forward to them contributing next season!

This season was a tale of two teams, with the real watershed moment being the first win against PSG. That's when I first adjusted tactics and really watched the team gel and show what they could become. They lost the very next game (a Coupe de ligue match) but after that they were near unbeatable.

Early Season Stade Rennais Record (not including PSG game) 7-5-6
