Wendell Gee's Moscow Mules

It's impossible to find information about this but apparently CF Jose Gonzales has quietly retired. Gonzales, 33, spent his last three years in Moscow red. He hit .281/.328 in limited appearances his injury-plagued final season, compiling a 2.5 WAR.

Originally drafted in 2033 (1-3 pick) by Berlin, Gonzales was traded the next year to what is now the Buenos Aires organization. He was a 2041 All-Star and four time Glove Wizard in center field while with the Gauchos. Gonzales came to Moscow in 2045 as part of the Donald Mason trade.

He was good the first few seasons I had him but then injuries got the better of him.

Interesting thing about Gonzales, he turned a positive WAR every pro season. Even when he struggled at the plate, he excelled in the field. He helped our team even when I was dogging him.

With Gonnet's return to Moscow, the Mules spring lineup looks as follows.

Outfield: Jaime Robles, Finley Tapley, Dominique Gonnet.
Infield: Alonso Donatello, Dani Gonzales, Javier Villareal, Hugo Yazîcî
Plate: Pei Wong, Zoubeir Adipo
Bench and Reserve: Valdinei Custance, Luis Velez, Feitze Schuur, Obiniana Esperenzilla, Roberto Gallegos, Bill Mahoney, Badr al din Zahir

Rotation: Nicodemas Hellmann, Bartolo Romero, Reginaldo Felitti, Shihi Uchida, Jose Rivas
Bullpen: Luis Chaves, Leonardo Muniz, Virgil Langenkamp, Luis Ibarria, Mezyan Asad, Carlitos Bernardino, Lenya Katalov

I suddenly have a stable of good outfielders. Custance, Velez, and Gallegos were most of my outfield the past two years, when Robles played first.

Lineup post edited to reflect the signing of Javier Villareal last night. I think we would have been a playoff team without him. Sort of hard to gauge his impact.

Truthfully didn't expect to sign either Mounds or Gonnet, and so I had my focus elsewhere.

I got that, my clubhouse doesn't have any problems but they are all business in there. No jokes to be had

I was perusing the Mule pages and noticed how nicely set up you are in terms of salary. You have a good chunk falling off this year, so many ways you can go with it. Your budget is set to improve by $2M and if you can squeeze into the playoffs that will go up even more. Since FA is so much better now having that budget space is a lot more valuable than it once was. Interested to see how you play it

Yeah, I don't have any specific plans for setting up next year. 2050 will be a tough year though as some big names come off their contracts.

You could sign a few now if you can get them for around $18M-$20M. Your budget is projected to raise a fair amount too so you have some room to run if you keep it up

"Howard. What the fred are we doing trading away all our draft picks? This is the best draft pool in league history. Howard! Open this door!"

Howard's bedroom door opened. A little. His head emerged.

"Uh, yeah, about that. Sorry chief. Can this wait? Kinda busy chief."

"Howard, who the hell is that in your room? I thought you were a fuckin ghost?"

"Hey, don't upset her, man! She's, uh, fragile. Yeah. Fragile."

Another head appeared below Howard's in the crack of the door.

It was transparent. Transparent? Translucent. The room beyond shone through it. Then it moved away from the door, wearing nothing, a nothing through which the room's furniture was clearly visible.

"So Howard. By fragile, you mean ghostly."

"Ghost-ly! Hee hee hee! Howard...?"

"Enjoy the draft, chief. Gotta run."

The door closed.

Fuck this draft.

/edited to play up Howard's ghostly nature.

2048 Moves - Free Agents

Acquired C Gavin Anderton as a free agent. With Zippo Adipo on board as a backup and LHP specialist, I didn't need another catcher, but Anderton was way too good to pass up. He has responded with a .274/.355 year and 1.1 WAR. Zippo is destroying Triple A pitching but is reasonably content there. Zippo is available for trade in the off-season. Hate to see him languish.

Signed CF Dominique Gonnet as a free agent. I needed a CF and Gonnet has responded with a +3.9 ZR, zero errors in 102 starts, and a .255 average. He is a 1.2 WAR player this year. Good to get him back to Moscow.

Signed RF Rafael Ramirez as an undrafted minor league free agent. He is posting a 2.9 WAR in Triple A. I have so many corner outfielders that I have no room on the big league roster for Rafi this year. Need to open up a spot for him next year.

Signed 2B Javier Villareal as a free agent. The former Facebooker has a .302/.315 average and 1.1 WAR in the left infield. His defensive versatility and speed have helped us a ton.

Signed P Kellagh Heigham as a free agent when Nico Hellmann hurt himself. Heigham has pitched to 1.4 WAR and 181 ERA+ in 87 innings. Very happy with his work.

2048 Moves - Callups

2B Ronald Riggs was a 2048 All Star in Triple A. I've had my eye on him and decided he had nothing left to prove in Khatukay. His early WBL months were abysmal but he has apparently gotten his swing into a groove. Howard thinks he is WBL All Star material. Rigg's emergence is the reason I was okay moving Gwilt to Amsterdam for pitching.

BTW, Riggs was a 13th round draft pick by Seoul in 2044. He was cut from their system the next off-season - understandably so - but I was so desperate for any drop of water in the middle infield and had nothing to lose by taking a chance on him. If his performance rises to Howard's expectation, he'll go down as a great find. At worst, he made the bigs for at least a short time.

2048 Moves - Trades

Acquired SP Cameron Corbishley in exchange for SS prospect Luke Gwilt. I am loath to give up middle infield prospects, but we needed elite pitching to stay competitive. Further, I was valuing another prospect over Gwilt, but the other guy is starting to look like a bust.

Acquired 2B Chris Brown in exchange for some draft picks. Brown is cheap and further solidifies our middle infield.

Summary

We have a decent infield now. The starting rotation and center field remain our weakest links. If we can shore those up next year, we should be a bit stronger in 2049.
