Pac-12 Thread

@Rutgers Mike

Okay, so they're a Leach team, which means they're throwing the ball a lot, which doesn't bode well for Rutgers unless their pass D got dramatically better. The offense looked a lot better in Year 2 than Year 1 (51st in total offense vs. 100th) and Halliday improved a lot over the year, I'm expecting him to be pretty good this year. Skill players wise, they return almost everybody of merit, the only problem could be the offensive line as they lost a lot of experience. I think the offense will be better than they were last year, though.

Defensively, it's iffy. They lost their best player and their secondary has been pretty decimated. They weren't exactly world beaters last year either. They were good enough against the lesser teams (shutout Idaho, gave up 7 points on a short field against Kiffin's USC, held Zona to 17 in Tuscon) but they were horrendous against teams with more talent (Oregon, ASU, Stanford). Their line should be fairly good, they lost probably their best player but everyone else is back. LB corps is decent too, their MLB Darryl Monroe will probably get 2nd-team Pac-12 or something. Their D is never going to be Alabama's or Michigan State's, both because of talent and philosophy, but they're trying to be an aggressive 3-4 D that create turnovers and sacks and bends but doesn't break.

I think they beat Rutgers by 10 or more, as it's a really good matchup for Wazzu (judging from last season). Wazzu's strength is throwing the ball and their weakest point on D is defending the pass. Rutgers had a horrendous pass D last year and has Gary Nova at QB (and lost their best WR). However, if Nova turns into a competent QB and Fridge can get that offense going, expect to see a shootout.

Interesting take. IMO both teams have similar talent levels.

I think Rutgers can keep it close if Nova is on his game like he was against Fresno last year or Arkansas the last 2 years.

You say WSU pass' D was bad last year, but their run D was even worse looking at the stats. Can Rutgers run the ball? I sure hope so. I might disagree that Rutgers lost their best receiver. In name and preseason recognition, Brandon Coleman was, but he was hurt all season with a knee injury. Leonte Carroo had a nice season for us last year and Tyler Kroft is a really good move TE.

Rutgers pass D is young, and last year they went away from the agressive zone blitzing D they did previously and went to vanilla man coverage with a 12 yard cushion. Rutgers changed their DC and brought back the coach who was DC Schiano's last year to coach LBs as well, so I think you will see more of that agressive stuff. I like Rutgers front 7 a lot with Darius Hamilton at 3 Tech and Steve Longa and Kevin Snyder at LB being the top players.

No, I think Wazzu's run D will be better than their pass D this year. They lost a lot in the secondary, including 1st rounder Deone Buchanon. Those run stats are probably inflated a little due to giving up like 4,000 yards against Oregon haha.

You may be right about talent levels, but at the very least offensively, Wazzu is going into their 3rd year in a system that brought the school to its first bowl game in a decade, with an established QB and WR corps. Rutgers has to break into a new system with a QB they are unsure of.

It'll be a fun game to watch.

How much is Rutgers changing the system doe? It's still pro style run first. Friedgen is a lot better offensive mind then Cignetti, Brock or Prince as well. :dunno:

Yeah, it might not a huge change. But there's probably some changes in verbiage, concepts, reads, etc.

Deepest the conference has been in a long time. But no 'great team', at least on paper. Will beat each other up. I see UCLA/Oregon in the Pac-12 title game.

USC cornerback Josh Shaw will be out indefinitely after suffering an injury while saving his nephew from drowning on Saturday night.
"I would do it again for whatever kid it was, it did not have to be my nephew," Shaw said on Monday. "My ankles really hurt, but I am lucky to be surrounded by the best trainers and doctors in the world. I am taking my rehab one day at a time, and I hope to be back on the field as soon as possible."
According to a school release, Shaw was at a family social function when he saw his 7-year-old nephew, who cannot swim, in distress in a pool. Shaw lept from a second-floor balcony and injured himself landing on the concrete below. He then crawled into the pool and got his nephew out safely.
"That was a heroic act by Josh, putting his personal safety aside," Steve Sarkisian said. "But that's the kind of person he is. It is unfortunate that he'll be sidelined for a while and we will miss his leadership and play, but I know he'll be working hard to get back on the field as soon as possible."
USC kicks off the 2014 season against Fresno State. It is the second-straight meeting against the Bulldogs, who USC defeated 45-20 in the Las Vegas Bowl with Clay Helton filling in as the interim coach.

FUUUUUUUUUUUU

Shaw injury on the heels of losing DE Jabari Ruffin for the year.

OTOH, if ever a player got injured for a good reason, that is it. At least it wasn't a DUI or falling down stairs in a drunken stupor.

He saved somebody's life, that seems worth missing a game against Fresno State, who USC is going to take a shit on anyway.

Hope so, as I will be in attendance. Shaw is out "indefinitely," I wouldn't be surprised if his injury doesn't wind up being more serious than the double high ankle sprains initially reported.

I can't wait for the Chris Connelly Gameday piece on how Shaw saved his nephew from drowning.

It was against UNLV so really who gives a shit, but that was a satisfying victory, even if I only got to read the highlights since I was at the Padres game.

UCLA is probably the most overhyped team I've seen in a while where I still have no idea where the hype is coming from.

Young cool culture kid corch, usc is down, two way player, Los Angeles, overrated QB fawned over because he's the first QB at UCLA in years that is not terrible.

I don't think Hundley is bad but he certainly has little help. Line was awful today and what skill player do you have to account for on every play? Underwhelming skill guys for sure.

And they got their asses completely kicked last year by Stanford/Oregon… maybe they'll prove us wrong but I have no idea how they're being talked up as a NC contender.

UCLA defense looked great even though they played Virginia, they have the possibility to have the best D in the PAC 12.

I like their d but outside of the turnovers I really disagree that they looked good. Uva nearly had 400 yards and their backup who had never played in a game looked good.

UCLA is much better than they looked today but that should have looked like a warm up game. Oregon and usc went to uva and kicked the shit out of them recently, so I don't buy any travel excuse.

Maybe they're having issues dealing with the hype. They were running around like morons before the game today swaggin like their shit didn't stink. Could be a good wakeup call.

Perkins starting at RB would be the first change I would make. He wasn't amazing or anything but 16 carries for 80 yards is good, plus he had a 10 or 15 yard carry wiped out by holding. James had 5 carries for 3 yards and Manfro was god awful in every aspect of the game.

As valid as the criticism of needing to find an offensive player outside Hundley is, they also used him terribly today. I saw maybe 1-2 designed runs.

If their line plays like they did today there isn't much hope. I'm sure some of those uva players are talented but they were blowing up everything. There wasn't a single drive where the UCLA line looked in control. That's concerning.

I mentioned this during the game but imo seeing mazzone at asu and ucla his offenses never do anything consistently well. They do a lot of things okay. I have no idea what their game plan ever is. He just always seems to want to involve everyone.

Haven't been on any Clippers boards, I see.

Well, no but I don't like the Clippers.

Seriously though, it is the worst.
