That was also back when those stats were good  Elway was Top 10 in almost every passing category and #2 in completion %

Josh Allen is like in the 90s in ever category, lol.

You know, these trog MEASURABLES guys could actually work out

You ever see Favre’s stats at fucking Southern Miss? They’re total garbage lol

But some idiot like Horse Face or HUE will demand he starts Week 1 and he will be horrendous

How many measurable guys have developed and become a good QB in the NFL in the past decade? What NFL team would you have faith in to develop somebody like that? Because they're generally not the teams that need a QB.

I think it's Joe Flacco, but he's also playing for a competent organization.

Bortles is still, statistically, not really a good QB. He was 20th in passer rating, and 12th in QBR. His only top ten stat this year was, uh, interceptions. But he's a WINNER so maybe you have a point.

The parallels for Bortles and Flacco are right there. That playoff run for the super bowl is legit the best 4 game stretch of Flacco’s whole career that just happened to come in the playoffs on a contract year.

Quarterbacks in general have not been developed well over the past decade. I think the stat is that Bortles is the only QB drafted since 2013 to win a playoff game

I feel like not that long ago, it was a given that QBs would sit a year before becoming a starter. Rodgers sat like three seasons I think. I’m sure that going away has had a direct impact on their development

It still works ala Garoppolo, but most teams are dumb and/or need their pick to start immediately.

That's why it was amazing to me that they ran TEBOW out of town, lol. As far as early success he was probably the best QB in years in the NFL, ha ha. Dude was having more success in his first season than my my wildest expectations when they drafted him, lol. I mean he may have never developed any further, but it was just shocking that he didn't even get a chance to lose!

Broncos organizational philosophy was to spend a 1st round pick on a QB EVERYONE said would be a bust. Then when he somehow wasn't a complete bust, and actually took them to the playoffs and won a game throwing for JOHN 316 yards against the #1 pass defense in the league, they shipped him out of town for a 4th round pick!

If ur gonna spend a 1st round pick on an idiot, then at least don't run him out of town WHEN HE'S ACTUALLY WINNING.

I think the last QB to be taken high, start right away and be successful was UCLA legend Troy Aikman. I'm sure Jimmy Johnson fucking the Vikings over in the Walker trade helped that process somewhat.

Mariota just won one this year...

Maybe it was two? I can’t remember

But Mariota was even worse than Bortles this year, so the point remains.

Wilson is the only guy I can think of that started day one and became a top tier QB (and maybe he’s second tier?)

Carr has had some rough luck, but I think he’s there.

Carr was pretty damn good last year tho.

They were from the same draft. Look at career numbers.

Bortles was second in the NFL in touchdowns his second year with absolutely no help on offense.

Carr has had the better career, but injuries and inconsistency are part of the risk of starting a rookie day one

I just don’t understand the argument you were trying to make. Carr has started from day one and been pretty damn good. The fact that they had similar stats and one made the playoffs and the other was 6-10 says a lot more about their teams than anything.

That stat kind of looks worse than it really is when you truly break it down. First, you get to to skip one of the better QB classes in 2012 (Luck, Wilson, Cousins, Tannehill, plus playoff wins by Foles and Osweiler).

The 2013 QB class was just awful. The best three were Manuel, Geno Smith, and Mike Glennon.

2014 was better in that it produced Bortles, Bridgewater, Carr, Garoppolo as starters. Bridgewater and Carr both led their teams to playoffs and would have gotten wins if A. Blair Walsh makes a chip shot field goal, and B. Carr doesnt break his leg with like a week left. They definitely would have beaten Houston with Brock (Srsly LOL BROCK GOT A PLAYOFF WIN).

2015 was obviously top heavy with Winston and Mariota (playoff winzzz). Thats probably it for that class unless some miracle happens with Hudnley/Siemian.

2016 had playoff QBs Goff, Wentz, and Dak (again, another situation where a late season injury costs the QB the playoff victory). Brissett looked passable in Indy when you consider the rest of that team is pretty much a dumpster fire outside of TY Hilton. (LOL at the fact tho Paxton Lynch and Christian Hackenberg were 1st and 2nd round picks).

2017 class is very much TBD but DeGOAT Watson looked amazing before he blew his knee. Trubisky will get his shot on a non-John Fox coached team to develop and Mahomes looks like he'll take over in KC.

Thats 13 pretty good QBs drafted in 2012-2016. Thats actually a pretty good number. I'm not a huge fan of sitting guys just to sit them and develop. If you're in Green Bay's position where you've got a guy like Favre, then hell yeah you can sit him. If you've got slop infront of him, you might as well give him the field reps. Its almost more important now to play him early because of the gigantic gap you're going to havve between his rookie and 2nd contract.

My point was that a bad team starting a QB right away is bad for development and makes it unlikely they will be a top tier player

9/10 times, the team will be bad for a while, which will make it tough for them to find success. And, because of that, you tend to have a high number of passes and shitty Olines which leads to a lot more injuries. Six of the guys gator mentioned have missed significant time

I only compared him to Bortles to say he’s not top tier. He’s certainly played better so far, but I can’t think Bortles’ career so far is the standard here haha

Your list didn’t prove otherwise haha. Wentz and Goff are pretty good, but who’s third best of that group? Winston? Dax?

Hell it might be fucking BORTLES

To be fair there was no talent around him his rookie season. Smith showed up in his second season and Irvin wasn't any good until 92.

Start right away and eventually be successful.

The '89 Cowboys team was fucking awful. The leading rusher was Temple great Paul Palmer who had 446 yards for the season. Aikman was the second leading rusher. Kelvin Martin was the leading receiver with 644 yards.

https://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/dal/1989.htm

Irvin missed most of the '89 season and the start of the '90 season with a torn ACL. Then, the Veterans Stadium Turf Monster ate his spine up in the late 90's.

Passing game has completely changed since then. NFL averages:

1990: 30 attempts per game, 56% completion, 195 yards

2016: 36 attempts per game, 63% completion, 242 yards

His career TD/INT ratio was under 1.2/1

The GOAT had multiple 30 TD seasons in the 90s while Aikman couldn’t even get above 20 half the time

I can’t believe I missed the Aikman comment. Holy fuck that’s the worst thing I’ve ever seen written on this board, and leach posts about Bortles ALOT.

Aikman is completely in that Joe Namath category of guys who are hilariously and retardedly overrated. He was an average QB behind the greatest offensive line in NFL history, a top 5 all time running back, a HOF receiver and came into the league at the absolute perfect time to where the salary cap and free agency wouldn’t be a factor till the end of the Cowboys run.
