Olympic shit and pissing show

No I don't think so. If Canada beats Finland in regulation the seeds would be..

1. Canada, 2. Sweden, 3. USA, 4. Finland, 5. Russia

A regulation loss by either team would put Canada/Finland and Russia on the other side of the bracket.

Right, which i why I posted

If it is true that Russia is the 5 seed, then I want an outright winner today to be in the 3 spot and get the Switzerland-Latvia winner in the Quarters. We would then be on a collision course with Sweden.

I don't want to play Russia or Canada again until a medal game. Even Czech as the 7 seed scares me.

It's so bad. It was the first thing many people noticed when they were unveiled.

I was reading that Malkin/Ovechkin are frustrated with the Russian corch because of some sort of KHL agenda as evidence by using Radulov/Kovalchuk with the penalty shots today. They have a pretty nice draw to reach the Gold Medal game.. no USA or Canada. Just triple shift Malkin/Ovi/Datsyuk.

No, USA or Canada but gotta go through the 2 best goalies in the tournament. Good luck with that.

So I finally got to see a little curling on TV today. This guy y'all have been calling fatty is the same guy from Vancouver. I remember him. If he isn't any good, then how come he keeps going to the olympics? Seems the me the other curlers need to step up and beat him if they are so good.

I'd happily make the trip to South Korea as an Olympian.

In regard to last night's game, Fatty's problem is he's a whiner. Something is always bothering him (the ice, the rocks, etc.). Last night, he started to throw his second under the bus for sweeping or not sweeping when told. Now, I've never been in an arena curling environment but I have participated in a tournament environment and it can be hard to hear. You need to have hand signals to communicate with the sweepers. Fatty's vice has no opinions on anything. Fatty tells him what to do and always calls his own sweeping. The vice has very little input. This is an uncommon setup. The vice should able to have input if only to provide a second opinion/option.

Looking at the bigger picture USA Curling's problem is two-fold:

1) We're not very good on the international stage. We were good 10 years ago but we're not good now. Which leads into:

2) Our curlers, in international competition, are amateurs curling in a more professionalized sport. When curling was added to the Olympics in 1998, almost every country was sending athletes who had full-time jobs and curled as more of "side job" because there wasn't any money in it. Even Canada had a Fatty as their skip. As sponsorship especially in Canada grew and countries wanted to win an Olympic medal, professionalism in the sport took hold. Now in 2012, curlers can curl full-time. They still have a full-time job but the elite curlers can make money off of curling.

Countries (except the US and Canada) now select which team is going to be their "elite" team and throw all their money behind them. This allows them to completely focus on curling and not curling and work during curling season. Canada has so many elite teams that the CCA can't throw their money behind just one team when Canada's #20 team can contend for a medal.

In the US, the money just isn't there from either the USCA or USOC to put everything one "elite" team. As a result, our "elite" curlers have to both work full-time and curl in tournaments to gain experience.

It will be interesting to see if the USCA/USOC finds the funding to go the "elite" team model. If they don't, we will probably see poorer and poorer performances in the Olympics...provided we qualify.

Yeah I went back and found it, but still. Y'all pretty harsh on the guy. It's not like we have anyone better to send.

He set himself up for a lot of it when HBO did a Real Sports segment on him. Basically, the team slept 'til noon got up had McDonalds for lunch, went and practice, came home played video games, ate dinner, then practiced some more. Made him look like a lazy ass and when a person's first impression of you is as an lazy ass and then you go shit the bed in the Olympics....don't be surprised when people give you a hard time.

There are US curlers who are as good as him but are a lot more professional in their off-ice routine and training. They just haven't won Olympic trials. The only big events that Shuster has won is 2010 and 2014 Olympic Trials.

Still, whoever we send is going to be a one-legged man entering an ass-kicking contest unless the USCA/USOC ups their funding and lets them be more professional and less amateur.

goblue, out of curiosity, how far away are you from qualifying for the Olympics? From what it sounds like, there aren't a ton of curling teams in the US, so you might not be too far away.

Hating on NBC isn't happening enough here. Today in midday rather than show two-man bobsleigh live they had fucking ice dancing on. Yes I could find some way to stream it live, but that is hot garbage. CNBC showing paid programming, USA showing terrible television, and NBC was showing reruns of the Brady Bunch this afternoon in NOLA.

The evening package is always terrible. The medal contenders and the Americans is all we see. Too much "production" crap about dolls or a skeleton rider having a miscarriage (really, we are going to ask the "tough questions" by having a woman relive a miscarriage in front of millions of people?!?), or just everything else NBC shows that isn't the actual Olympics.

Hopefully 2016 being in Rio (and live) will mean NBC can do better. But will they have multiple channels at once in primetime to cover multiple events or just shit on everyone with one channel from 7-11?

I've got two major things working against me:

1) where I live in the northeast - the quality of the curlers is not as good as the quality in the midwest

2) My age - I became a grown man and turned 40 back on the 3rd of this month.

My best chance to qualify for national competition is either in Club Nationals (where all four teams members are from the same club) or Mixed Nationals. At Club Nationals, each of the 10 regions is guaranteed one spot in the finals. I've almost qualified for this event a few years ago. My team went 5-2 in qualifying and came in 2nd place to another team from my club which went 6-1.

My club has had a couple of women who has gone to US Nationals. My plan is to ask them in a couple years when they are done squeezing out kids if they wanted to make a run at Mixed Nationals. I curled on a mixed league team with them in my second year of curling and they were deep in training for nationals. There were nights when me and the 4th player didn't need to show up. They could beat the other team playing 8 rocks to 4. They were that good.

If you were to ask me out all the competitive teams in the US, I would say the competitive team that I go to the City of Ottawa Bonspiel with would rank somewhere between 50th and 75th. Probably closer to 75th than to 50th.

I just stream anything I really want to watch through the NBC Live Extra app.

This. While their Summer Olympic coverage isn't amazing by any means, it sure is much better than then hot flaming pile of monkey shit they have called the Winter Olympics. Ice dancing? For fuck sake who gives a damn.

Give us entire events, like bobsled and curling, things that haven't pounded and forced down our throats.

NBC coverage: the snowboarder chick wrecks shop, whiplashes her head against the ice and goes limp. NBC shows the replay 3 times and goes "We'll give you an update AFTER A WORD FROM OUR SPONSERS"

No. Jingoism will continue in 2016. They'll also show the sports that get the big ratings (Gymnastics, Swimming, Big track races) on NBC mothership, stick basketball and soccer on NBCSN and only show the main competitors/ Americans.

Big "fuck you" to the interviewer that just talked to Bode. That was fucked up.

These guys are all clowns. The guy who was doing analysis on Bobsleigh was particularly horrible.

Plus Tom Hammond doing any sport, which is interesting since they didn't use him or that lady when they showed the figure skating live.

The interview with Bode was just so bad though. Asked 3 questions about his dead brother, he gets choked up and obviously doesn't want to talk about it after the first 2, she still asks the third one and he breaks down and crouches down on the snow. They keep the camera on him for about 20 seconds for da feelz.
