Typically its an over-saturation. Even if you hate the sport, youre almost forced to play it to just fit in. I knew plenty of kids who didnt enjoy watching it on tv but played it everyday at school because all the boys in class would be playing.

I would play it every lunch/morning break at school, then have 'football practice' after school and then would play it at home with either my brother or other kids who lived near us. Then on a Saturday it would be match/or more training with either school or the local club team I played for. So its just constant, I think back to when I was quite a young kid and we just played all the time, be it 5 on 5, 2 on 3, Wembley doubles, red arse or heads and volleys. (You guys are going to have a riot with that)
t.

my cousin was forced to play starting in grade school due to an irish step father who came to town at that time (Tallahassee) and made him (and also would not allow football until h.s. at which point was to late for footbaw since lincoln h.s. is a dominating force usually in flawda.

edit* irish step dad still coaches soccer to this day, and had me go to the irish camp in orlando florida with him so he wouldn't be embarrassed to ask for autographs as he was covering the Irish team for a newspaper from his homeland. I had no problem asking for autographs as i was 11 in 1994 and had already approached world super stars like Bobby Bowden, Charlie Ward, Reinard Wilson and Warrick Dunn for autographs at spring games. GOing up to weirdo soccer players was a piece of cake.

@GR8 2 B FL G8R

at any rate he went on to play juco soccer and loved it, played with recruited kids from england/scotland/ireland etc...

he still only watches world cup on TV lol. He abhors it as a tv sport, loves to play it though.

I dream of a day when NCAA Men's Soccer has full-scholarships for every player, and you can draw at least a few thousand fans and not dozens to soccer games anywhere not named Akron.

I dream of a day where NCAA Soccer has no say in player development. Or a very marginalized part.

EDIT: I think Renegade might have been slightly sarcastic.

I agree with the sentiment, but I don't see the NCAA and the whole "play this sport to get a scholarship" mentality going away. Fixing NCAA would be a huge step in and of itself...support to make soccer seem viable and important and join Fball, basketball, and baseball in a Big 4 in the college environment and not be lumped in with the non-revenue sports. The visibility of both scholarships and pro athletes will encourage the shift of some athletes to soccer like's being discussed here, but right now it's not set up to be attractive with only partial scholarships available to most men.

Too bad Travis didn't start playing fifa until 2012 - he would've loved Bob Bradley.

Thanks chi-bob for the in-depth and enlightening answer. I suppose we really don't have anything analogous in America to compare to soccer in terms of national obsession. Baseball, maybe circa 1935 might be close, but now American kids have numerous sports to pick from and highly athletic kids tend to play multiple sports up to high school age. Whether that hinders or helps their success in any one sport might be another interesting Travis-chibob argument.

Football might be a close analog to soccer in terms of its almost universal popularity in the States, but it's not a sport that lends itself to impromptu pickup games very much, and it's also a sport which excludes large swaths of the population because they aren't giants. An athletic (but not outrageously so) kid who is 5'10" and 175lbs will be a marginal high school football player as well as likely an even more marginal high school basketball player.

Soccer is the most pickup friendly game there is. Everybody else plays it except Murricans and Canucks.

Tall hockey players kinda perplex me, I wouldve thought that was a sport where youd have an advantage being short. Low centre of gravity, smaller check zone etc.

Man the thing I miss most about college is pickup soccer games with the international students. More than a few Arabs were on the losing end of the size vs technique discussion.

Without being racist, I dont think iv ever played football with an arab of any discernible skill. They probably lacked both size and technique.

It's usually defencemen/Goalies that are the tallest. Chara was slow as this playoffs but it was still hard to cut in on him because his stick can pretty much reach anything.

This is a rough estimate

Tall goalies are because when you go down in the butterfly, there is still very little for the puck to go.

You are certainly correct, but they still had better technique than me, lol. I just run around dominating the pitch with my superior physical attributes until it is time to shoot, then I just toe hack the ball and laugh when it veers unpredictably in the air and throws people off like a knuckle ball. That's why I still want to take Deadmong on in PKs. I bet I could score 7/10 on him just toe hacking the ball.

Holy shit Blanco is starting

I love the way Alejandro Moreno talks. He always brings up Rafa Marquez every other sentence. I hope Blanco scores a hattrick or something crazy, he's a relic

Also Oribe Peralta's nickname (el cepillo) is The Brush, which always makes me laugh. Blanco looks gassed after 5 minutes.

I should just perma-delete those. Just need TM or Irishman to like them first

Premier League Champs
Got bored in school decided to rank my rooting interests for all 32 teams in the tournament, if anyone cares. (Doubtful)

1. USA: Obvious.
2. Argentina: Aguero, Zaba and Demi. Also quite like Lavezzi and Di Maria.
3. France: Really like everyone on the squad. Should have Nasri but meh.
4. Ivory Coast: Best African team, lots of talented and fun to watch attackers. Also Yaya but Yaya’s kinda being a dick now.
5. Bosnia: Dzeko + they’re playing in their first World Cup.
6. Belgium: Absurd amount of young talent. And Kompany.
7. Italy: BALOOOOOOTELLI
8. Uruguay: Hoping Suarez just trolls the hell out of everyone. Cavani is alright too.
9. Croatia: Checkerboard kit. <3.
10. Colombia: Awesome that they’re back in the WC after Escobar’s murder in 1994.
11. Germany: They'd be top 3 if they weren't in the USA's group. Like everyone other than Özil.
12. England: Actually might be exciting to watch. Go Joe Hart.
13. Spain: Winning back to back WC and Euros would be boring. But David Silva is totally the best.
14. Japan: Play-a-maker and Honda will be enjoyable to watch.
15. Australia: You poor things.
16. Holland: Dislike RVP and van Gaal for obvious reasons. Robben is really fun to watch and De Jong is totally the best.
17. Chile: Sanchez and Vidal are great players and Vargas is solid as well. But outside of those three no one is that interesting to watch.
18. Brazil: Don’t like how Neymar acts and Dani Alves is a bit of a douche. Fernandinho is cool but there’s too many guys on the squad I don’t like for them to be that high up.
TEAMS THAT I HAVE NO POSITIVE OR NEGATIVE OPINION ON
Cameroon, Honduras, Ecuador, Switzerland, Nigeria, South Korea
25. Russia: Communists.
26. Algeria: They seemed content to get a 0-0 and not advance in the Landon Donovan game.
27. Iran: Will likely be boring to watch. Reza Ghoochannejhad is a silly name.
28. Greece: Euro 2004.
29. Portugal: Pepe.
30. Ghana: Pretty obvious. If they didn’t face the USA in 2006 and 2010 they’d be top 10.
31. Costa Rica: Acted like little bitches over the snow game and then the USA’s qualifier in Costa Rica.
32. Mexico: Duh.

any of your soccer nerds have an opinion on the best WC winner odds out there

doing our fantasyfootball drafter order based on lotto for top 12 teams, with 13-24 being assigned in reverse cowgirl order

I looked up the vegas odds when I picked my "Favorite Teams" list. I'd say you have Brazil and Argentina as the favorites because of location and then after that Spain and Germany as the clear next best... then the rest of the pack that have a puncher's chance (Belgium, France, England, Portugal, UrAGay, Colombia, Italy, Netherlands, Chile). After that group I honestly don't think anyone has a real chance. So really only like 13 teams with under 50:1 odds and then everyone else is in that 100:1 or greater range.

Mexico at 32? Stopping hanging out with Beardown.

I'd put Mexico at 32, also.

I don't hate the country, its people, or its team. But I don't want to be 2 hours from the border either if Mexico wins the World Cup. The ensuing fiesta would be insufferable.

It'd be like if you asked me to rank all Pac12 teams in order of who I most want to win the conference to who I least want to win the conference. UCLA is coming in at 12. I don't hate UCLA. I have a lot of friends who went there. But I don't want them being the champs either.

I'd rather cheer for Mexican than the U.S.

 Since I disagree with basically all of your soccer opinions, this fits perfectly.
You don't hate them, you just don't want to see them be happy

I am going to throw a fiesta on your lawn with all my cousins when we win. VIVA MEXICO!

Best show up in a beatup Toyota with gardening equipment in the back so they'll open the gates for you.

I was hoping Tmang's post sparked another couple pages of people trying to tell Travis that worse athletes always make better soccer players.

Technical skills are a waste of time. Let's just get 11 Chad Johnson-Ochocinco's out there. That dude's an athlete. If only he wanted to play soccer.

We should get guys who can juggle a ball magnificently but can only walk around the field.

Combination of the two. Juggler juggles the ball while Chad sprints downfield. Juggler then sends a 70 yard aerial through ball that lands perfectly on Johnson's forehead, and Johnson accidentally heads it into the goal.

Unstoppable formula.

I think with the elite technical skills guys who can't run possess, they could walk it up for a shorter lob.
