Sanford Seminole at Astronaut
ASTRONAUT PULLS AWAY IN SECOND HALF
The Astronaut War Eagles began their title defense with a 28-10 victory over visiting Sanford Seminole. Astronaut led 14-10 at halftime before putting things away in the 2[sup]nd[/sup] half.
In the first quarter, defensive tackle Frankie Glenn hit the Sanford quarterback jarring the ball loose. Fellow defensive tackled David Montgomery pounced on the ball at the Sanford 9 yard line. After a 5 yard penalty pushed them back and 2 runs that produced 6 yards, the War Eagles were faced with 3[sup]rd[/sup] and goal. Junior quarterback Keith Mack, making his first career start, then found senior wide receiver Bogie Statham in the end zone for a touchdown pass. All-State kicker Kurt Aken added the extra point to make it 7-0 with 3:14 left.
The War Eagle defense came up big again with an interception by Pat Roath at the Sanford 43. A few plays later, Senior Fullback Steve Godfrey scored from 1 yard away to make it 14-0. The score was set up by Godfrey’s 18 yard run to the 1. Sanford, which went to the air 45 times for 305 yards, got on the board with 4:10 left in the half on a 23 yard touchdown pass. After forcing a quick Astronaut punt they got a 31 yard field goal as time expired to make the halftime score 14-10.
“I had to go in and tell them to wake up at halftime. A number 1 team doesn’t play like that,” said Astronaut Coach B. Mack.
Sanford opened the second half by driving to the Astronaut 30 yard line. But there a 4[sup]th[/sup] down pass fell incomplete and they turned the ball over on downs. “That was when we sort of turned it around and got momentum back,” said Mack.
Matthew Mack, the War Eagles senior running back, gave his team some breathing room with a 26 yard touchdown run with 1:15 left in the third quarter. The 8 play, 97 yard drive started after the War Eagles were backed up on their own 3 yard line following a Sanford punt.
With 6:17 left in the game, fullback David Godfrey scored on a 1 yard run to finish out the scoring.
