ASTRONAUT PULLS AWAY IN SECOND HALF

The Astronaut War Eagles began their title defense with a 28-10 victory over visiting Sanford Seminole. Astronaut led 14-10 at halftime before putting things away in the 2[sup]nd[/sup] half.

In the first quarter, defensive tackle Frankie Glenn hit the Sanford quarterback jarring the ball loose. Fellow defensive tackled David Montgomery pounced on the ball at the Sanford 9 yard line. After a 5 yard penalty pushed them back and 2 runs that produced 6 yards, the War Eagles were faced with 3[sup]rd[/sup] and goal. Junior quarterback Keith Mack, making his first career start, then found senior wide receiver Bogie Statham in the end zone for a touchdown pass. All-State kicker Kurt Aken added the extra point to make it 7-0 with 3:14 left.

The War Eagle defense came up big again with an interception by Pat Roath at the Sanford 43. A few plays later, Senior Fullback Steve Godfrey scored from 1 yard away to make it 14-0. The score was set up by Godfrey’s 18 yard run to the 1. Sanford, which went to the air 45 times for 305 yards, got on the board with 4:10 left in the half on a 23 yard touchdown pass. After forcing a quick Astronaut punt they got a 31 yard field goal as time expired to make the halftime score 14-10.

“I had to go in and tell them to wake up at halftime. A number 1 team doesn’t play like that,” said Astronaut Coach B. Mack.

Sanford opened the second half by driving to the Astronaut 30 yard line. But there a 4[sup]th[/sup] down pass fell incomplete and they turned the ball over on downs. “That was when we sort of turned it around and got momentum back,” said Mack.

Matthew Mack, the War Eagles senior running back, gave his team some breathing room with a 26 yard touchdown run with 1:15 left in the third quarter. The 8 play, 97 yard drive started after the War Eagles were backed up on their own 3 yard line following a Sanford punt.

With 6:17 left in the game, fullback David Godfrey scored on a 1 yard run to finish out the scoring.

WAR EAGLES BEAT BARRACUDAS

NEW SMYRNA BEACH—Astronaut moved to 2-0 on the season with a 31-14 win over New Smyrna Beach Friday night. The War Eagles racked up 398 yards of total offense.

New Smyrna had a 12 play 76 yard drive stall on the Astronaut 2 yard line when the War Eagles made a goal line stand and tripped up the running back on 4[sup]th[/sup] down.

Astronaut took a 3-0 lead with Kurt Aken’s 20 yard field goal in the 2[sup]nd[/sup] quarter. With 1:05 left in the half, quarterback Keith Mack completed a 22 yard scoring strike to wideout Dennis Campbell. The play was the culmination of an 8 play 78 yard drive. Mack completed 5 of 8 passes for 121 yards.

With 5:04 left in the third quarter, Matthew Mack scored on a 4 yard touchdown run to make it 17-0. The War Eagles were continuing on their roll, when Keith Mack made his first mistake of the game, throwing an interception that was returned to the War Eagle 33. New Smyrna took advantage of the short field with a 23 yard touchdown run with 8 seconds left, making it 17-7.

The War Eagles then went on a 12 play 75 yard march that ended with David Godfrey’s 1 yard touchdown plunge. With just over 6 minutes remaining in the game the War Eagles held a 24-7 advantage. New Smyrna connected on a 41 yard touchdown pass two minutes later to make it 24-14. Matthew Mack finished off the scoring with a 7 yard touchdown run with 1:09 remaining. He finished with a game high 125 yards on 17 rushes.

“We moved the ball well all night. I think we only punted twice,” said Astro Coach B. Mack. “We still have little things to work on. There’s always something we can improve.”

WAR EAGLE OFFENSE CONTINUES ROLL

  1. PIERCE—Astronaut improved to 3-0 on the season with a 30-14 win over Ft. Pierce Central Friday night.

The Cobras threatened early but a 4[sup]th[/sup] and 2 rush was stopped at the Astronaut 20 with 4:29 left in the first quarter. Astronaut took a 7-0 lead when Junior quarterback Keith Mack scored on a 14 yard touchdown run with 11:46 left in the half. Mack led the War Eagles on an 11 play 76 yard drive.

After Ft. Pierce punt, Sophomore Joe Britt darted for a 37 yard touchdown run to make it 14-0. Later in the quarter, Matthew Mack scored on a 6 yard run. The first half scoring was complete when Kurt Aken nailed a 45 yard field goal with no time left in the half. “He’s got a heck of a leg,” said Astronaut Coach B. Mack. “It’s a luxury to have a kid that can kick that well at this level.”

Ft. Pierce got on the board with a 12 yard touchdown pass with 6:58 left in the third quarter. A two point pass attempt was no good and the lead was 24-6. Astronaut responded with a 13 play 70 yard drive which took up the all but 4 seconds of the rest of the quarter. Keith Mack connected with Bogie Statham for a 4 yard scoring toss. Ironically, Aken missed the extra point leaving the score at 30-6.

Ft. Pierce added a score and two point conversion with 7:29 left. Keith Mack finished 6 for 9 passing for 131 yards. Britt led all rushers with 67 yards on just 6 attempts. “Joe provides a little bit more speed than our other backs. He’s just a sophomore so we look for him to keep improving,” said B. Mack.

Astronaut beat New Smyrna 36-0. They then beat Ft. Pierce 20-7. The win over Ft Pierce was the 100[sup]th[/sup] of Corch Jay Donney’s career. Steve Godfrey carried 21 times for 111 yards and 2 scores in the win over Ft. Pierce

I feel like to this point in the season I was underperforming actual results, on the defensive end. In the first three games I outscored opponents 89-38 in dynasty. In reel life it was 84-7. And the 7 came on an interception return for td. So far in REEL life the Astronaut defense had not allowed a point in the first three games.

ASTRONAUT ROCKS ROCKLEDGE, 48-7

Astronaut moved to 4-0 on the season with a 48-7 win over the Rockledge Raiders Friday night at McClarty Stadium. It marked the 18[sup]th[/sup] consecutive victory for the War Eagles. Rockledge was held to just 83 yards of total offense, while Astronaut accounted for 346.

The War Eagles stormed out from the beginning with a 31 point first quarter. David Ross intercepted a Raider pass and returned it 32 yards to the Rockledge 21. David Godfrey then ran twice, a 20 yard jaunt and a 1 yard touchdown run. Rockledge then was held on three plays and forced to punt. Joe Britt took the kick and returned it 46 yards for a quick 14-0 lead. Then Tony Stover recovered a fumble at the Raider 16. Matthew Mack took the next play 16 yards into the endzone. The War Eagles had run 3 offensive plays and held a 21-0 advantange.

“We just got all the breaks in the early going and made some big plays,” said Astronaut Coach B. Mack.

It didn’t stop there. Senior cornerback Darryl Blandford intercepted a pass on Rockledge’s next possession, setting the War Eagles up with the ball on the Rockledge 21. The War Eagles stalled at the 7 and Kurt Aken booted a 24 yard field goal. Finally, Keith Mack took off on a scramble and scored from 21 yards away with 56 seconds remaining in the quarter.

Rockledge finally steadied itself, and put together a 9 play 77 yard drive. They scored on a 28 yard touchdown pass with 8:44 left in the half. Aken finished off first half scoring with a 28 yard field goal with 4 seconds left. Astronaut was in full control 34-7 at halftime.

In the second half, Astronaut used its reserve units. “I was really proud of our second and third team guys, especially after that long drive,” said Coach Mack. He was referring to an 18 play 74 yard drive that last 10 minutes and 2 seconds. It culminated with David Godfrey’s 5 yard touchdown run. Backup quarter Clark Cook scored on a 1 yard run with 2:33 left in the game, capping a 12 play 56 yard drive that consumed 6 and a half minutes.

“The instructions in the 2[sup]nd[/sup] half were to just run the ball, we didn’t throw a pass,” said Mack. “They executed that game plan perfectly.”

WAR EAGLES OVER SCORPS

Astronaut defeated host Satellite 24-7 Friday night behind a running game that picked up over 300 yards. The War Eagles move to 5-0 on the season. They will play their first district game against Palm Bay next week.

Kurt Aken gave the War Eagles a 3-0 lead with a 25 yard field goal with 2:07 left in the 1[sup]st[/sup] quarter. Satellite then drove to the War Eagle 25 but could not convert on 4[sup]th[/sup] down. Junior quarterback Keith Mack threw a 15 yard scoring strike to sophomore tight end Jeff Boyd with 5:52 left in the half. The War Eagles drove 71 yards in 7 plays on the scoring drive. Another War Eagles drive stall at the Satellite 25 when Mack’s 4[sup]th[/sup] down pass was incomplete with 52 seconds left.

“I should have kicked the field goal there. Kurt can make them from that far,” said Astronaut Coach B. Mack. “I got a little greedy.”

The War Eagles put together another 71 yard march in the third quarter. This time, Steve Godfrey scored on an 8 yard touchdown run with 6:58 left to lead 17-0. Satellite answered with a 10 play 73 yard drive scoring on a 2 yard run to make it 17-7.

The War Eagles put the game away in the fourth with a 15 play 73 yard driving consuming over 6 minutes. Keith Mack tossed his 2[sup]nd[/sup] touchdown pass of the night, this time to Bogie Statham from 6 yards away.

The War Eagles running game was led by Matthew Mack with 14 carries for 135 yards. Steve Godfrey added 94 yards on 18 attempts.

ASTRONAUT SURVIVES CLOSE CALL

Palm Bay gave the Astronaut War Eagles all they could handle Friday night at Draa field, but the War Eagles escaped with a 17-15 win. The win gives the War Eagles a leg up in the district race as it was the first such game for both teams. Astronaut now moves to 6-0 on the season and has stretched their school record win streak to 20 games.

The War Eagles took a 3-0 lead with 4 minutes remaining in the 1[sup]st[/sup] quarter on Kurt Aken’s 36 yard field goal. In the second quarter, it was an Aken punt that pinned the Pirates on their own 3 yard line. After Palm Bay was forced to punt, Joe Britt scored on a 15 yard touchdown run to make it 10-0 with 5:54 left in the half.

Late in the half, an Astronaut mistake allowed Palm Bay to get on the board. Junior quarterback Keith Mack threw an interception with 40 seconds left that set Palm Bay up on the Astronaut half of the field. The Pirates were able to convert a 25 yard field goal as time expired, making it 10-3.

Another Mack interception in the third quarter lead to a 35 yard Palm Bay field goal. The Pirates steady kicker then added another from 20 yards with 2:03 left in the third quarter, leaving the score at 10-9. “We were lucky to hold them to field goals. Our defense stiffened up in the nick of time,” said Astronaut Coach B. Mack.

After an exchange of punts, the War Eagles drove 72 yards in 9 plays taking a little over 4 minutes off the clock. Steve Godfrey finished off the drive with a 17 yard touchdown run. Aken’s extra point gave the War Eagles a 17-9 lead with 5:50 remaining in the game.

Palm Bay then drove 70 yards in 13 plays. With 1:44 left to play the Pirates scored on a 2 yard touchdown run. The two point conversion rush attempt was stuffed by the War Eagle defense and Astronaut held tightly to a 17-15 lead. Palm Bay attempted an onside kick but Bogie Statham caught the ball for Astronaut, which ran out the clock.

“That was a good 4[sup]th[/sup] quarter by both squads there. Both offenses put together the drives they needed to. We just had one more stop in us,” said Mack.

Astronaut beat Satellite 21-19 after getting out to a 21-0 lead. Then they lost to Palm Bay 21-19. It was the first loss of the season for the War Eagles, and for the 2[sup]nd[/sup] year in a row Palm Bay was in command for the district race that only would have 3 games.

In the Palm Bay game Astronaut gambled on a two point conversion in the 2[sup]nd[/sup] quarter after pulling to 14-13. It was a rush attempt that failed. Much like in the dynasty game, the 4[sup]th[/sup] quarter was a back and forth affair. Palm Bay scored an early touchdown to make it 21-13. Astronaut answered as Quarterback Clark Cook hit Jeff Boyd for a 10 yard touchdown pass. Trailing 21-19, the War Eagles two point conversion pass was incomplete.

Astronaut forced Palm Bay to punt and got the ball back with 3:40 left. They drove to the Palm Bay 32 yard line but no further. With 33 seconds to play Kurt Aken’s 50 yard field goal attempt to win fell just short.

A stingy Astronaut defense limited Eau Gallie’s offense to just 83 yards and 2 first downs Friday night at Draa Field. The War Eagle’s moved to 7-0 on the season with the 24-0 win.

Matthew Mack scored the game’s first points with a 6 yard touchdown run with 4:51 left in the first quarter. He followed that up with a 25 yard touchdown run with 1:12 left in the quarter. Mack, War Eagle’s leading rusher this season, finished with 65 yards on 8 carries.

In the 2[sup]nd[/sup] quarter, quarterback Keith Mack completed a 3 yard touchdown pass to Bogie Statham with 41 seconds left. Keith, Matthew’s younger brother, completed all 7 of his pass attempts for 97 yards:.

Astronaut added a 34 yard field goal by Senior Kurt Aken with 2:20 remaining in the third quarter. At that point the backups for Astronaut took over and the score remaining 24-0 until the final gun.

ASTRONAUT CONTINUES STRONG PLAY

The Astronaut War Eagles improved to 8-0 on the season with a 24-3 win over Orlando Colonial Friday night at Draa Field. The War Eagles defense turned in a dominant performance, holding the Grenadiers to only 16 yards of total offense, all through the air.

The only points scored by Colonial were set up by a turnover. Keith Mack, Astronaut’s junior quarterback, threw an interception which was returned to the Astronaut 29. Colonial moved to the Astronaut 21 but had to settle for a 38 yard field goal and 3-0 lead.

Colonial’s defense was equally tough in the first half, limiting the War Eagles to a 37 yard Kurt Aken field goal with 2:05 remaining to play and a 3-3 tie. “We shot ourselves in the foot with a couple first half turnovers,” said Astronaut Coach B. Mack.

In the third quarter, Astronaut drove to the Colonial 25 before turning the ball over on downs. Their first touchdown didn’t come until 2:40 left in the third. That’s when Matthew Mack took off on a spectacular 22 yard touchdown run. Mack, made two defenders miss, spun off the tackle off another and finally broke free from a tackle to stumble into the end zone. It was the highlight of an otherwise frustrating night for Mack as he finished with 45 yards on 9 carries.

In the 4[sup]th[/sup] quarter, Senior Fullback Steve Godfrey scored on a 1 yard run to make the score 17-3 with 7:49 left. Godfrey set up the touchdown with a 20 yard run to the 3 yard line two plays earlier. Finally, he capped off the scoring with a 5 yard touchdown run with 3:01 left. ASTRONAUT CRUSHES COCOA

Astronaut outgained Cocoa 352 to 82 Friday night at McClarty Stadium en route to a 26-7 victory. Cocoa’s only points came on a fumble return for touchdown late in the 4[sup]th[/sup] quarter. Astronaut is now 9-0 on the season and 2-0 in district play. The win sets up another showdown with crosstown rival Titusville in two weeks for the district championship. Astronaut has now won 23 straight games.

The War Eagles got going when sophomore running back Joe Britt took off on a 45 yard run before being pushed out on the 2 yard line. Senior fullback Steve Godfrey scored on the next play with 5:02 remaining in the first quarter.

In the 2[sup]nd[/sup] quarter, junior quarterback Keith Mack rumbled 34 yards on an option keeper to put the War Eagles up 13-0. Kurt Aken’s extra point attempt missed. The run capped a 10 play 90 yard drive that consumed 5 minutes and 12 seconds. Astronaut’s Benny Boyd recovered a fumble at the Cocoa 22 on the next possession. The War Eagles drove to the Cocoa 1, but that is where Godfrey was stopped on a 4[sup]th[/sup] down run.

In the 3[sup]rd[/sup] quarter, Matthew Mack scored from 4 yards out with 5:33 left. The extra point was missed once more and Astronaut had a 19-0 lead. Then with 9:22 left in the 4[sup]th[/sup] quarter, Matthew caught a 9 yard touchdown pass from his brother Keith. It marked the first time the brother’s connected on a touchdown pass this year. This time Aken’s extra point was true and the lead stood at 26-0.

With 6:17 left in the game, Cocoa got its score when Joe Britt fumbled and the Tigers returned it 22 yards to pay dirt. “That’s unfortunate, we could have had a shutout,” said Coach B. Mack. “But you don’t beat yourself up over it. We played a pretty complete game despite a couple mistakes.”

Astronaut beat Cocoa 36-6 to move to 8-1 on the season. Steve Godfrey ran 13 times for 97 yards and Joe Britt 11 times for 86 yards. They scored two touchdowns a piece and the War Eagles ran for 330 yards. Bogie Statham had 102 yards on 9 carries including a 65 yard touchdown.

The district race at this point was now Titusville 2-0, Palm Bay 2-1, Astronaut 1-1, Cocoa, 0-3. If Titusville were to beat Astronaut they would win the district. If Astronaut wins it sets up a 3 way tie and a tiebreaker playoff would ensue on the Monday night following the final game of the regular season.

To this point in history, Titusville and Astronaut were in the same district 8 years, 1977 to 1984. In 7 of those 8 years, and 6 consecutive from 79 to 84, the Titusville Astronaut game decided the district champion or would set up a tiebreaker playoff.

Titusville vs. Astronaut

The Astronaut War Eagles are moving onto the playoffs after capturing the Class 3A District 9 championship Friday night at Draa Field. Astronaut (10-0, 3-0) beat Titusville 24-14 to complete a second consecutive undefeated regular season. They have now won 24 consecutive games and will begin defense of their state title by traveling to Ft. Pierce Central next week. Astronaut beat Central 30-14 earlier in the season.

“I’m happy with the win and the accomplishments of this team,” said Astronaut Coach B. Mack. “Not too thrilled with playing a team we’ve already played, though.”

After a scoreless first quarter, Astronaut went on a 14 play 65 yard scoring drive consuming 6 minutes and 38 seconds. The drive culminated in a 1 yard quarterback sneak touchdown by Keith Mack. Later in the quarter, Steve Godfrey scored on a 2 yard touchdown run to make the score 14-0. Joe Britt took a screen pass and raced 60 yards for a third War Eagle touchdown, but the play was nullified by a clipping penalty.

Godfrey got his second touchdown on a 1 yard run with 3:30 left in the third quarter and the War Eagles moved to a 21-0 lead. Titusville scored on a 20 yard run with 59 seconds left in the third to get on the board.

WAR EAGLES CRUSH COBRAS

FORT PIERCE--Astronaut began its state title defense with a 30-0 win over Ft. Pierce Central Friday night. Earlier in the season, the War Eagles beat the Cobra’s 30-14. Astronaut’s defense must not have taken kindly to the 14 points given up in that game. They came out with an intensity that limited Central to just 35 yards and 2 first downs in the shutout.

In the first quarter, Joe Britt’s 22 yard punt return set up the War Eagles in good field position at the Central 43 yard line. After 3 plays netted 7 yards the War Eagles were faced with 4[sup]th[/sup] and 3. Keith Mack dropped back and hit Clark Cook on a 28 yard pass play setting up first and goal at the 8 yard line. Two plays later, Mack found Bogie Statham for a 5 yard touchdown pass with 21 seconds left in the quarter.

With 6:58 left in the half, Senior fullback Steve Godfrey scored on a 4 yard touchdown run to make the score 14-0. Senior running back Matthew Mack then added two touchdowns before halftime on runs of 22 and 6 yards. The lead was 27-0 at half. Godfrey led the way with 81 yards on 10 rushes.

The final scoring of the game came with 7:08 left in the 4[sup]th[/sup] quarter on Kurt Aken’s 34 yard field goal. “We were pretty good all –around tonight,” said Astronaut Coach B. Mack. “Our first step this year was winning district, and now this is another step in the right direction.” The War Eagles have now won 25 straight games. ASTRONAUT ESCAPES ST. PETERSBURG WITH OVERTIME WIN

ST. PETERSBURG—Astronaut advanced to the Class 3A state semifinals with a 17-10 win over St. Petersburg Friday. The War Eagles (12-0), who have now won 26 consecutive games, travel to Homestead next week to play for a second consecutive trip to the state championship game.

In the first quarter, Keith Mack threw the first of his 3 interceptions in the game with 7:07 left. Two plays later St. Petersburg completed a 54 yard touchdown pass to take a 7-0 lead. The turnover bug continued to be a theme in the 2[sup]nd[/sup] quarter. First Joe Britt mishandled a punt which set up St. Petersburg with prime field position on the Astronaut 40. However, the favor was quickly returned as David Montgomery hit St. Pete running back after catching a screen pass forcing a fumble. Sophomore tackle Walter day scooped the ball up and returned it 8 yards to the Astronaut 46 with 5:37 left. The War Eagles moved to the St. Pete 20. Kurt Aken kicked a 37 yard field goal with no time left on the clock to cut the halftime deficit to 4.

In the third quarter, a struggling War Eagle offense got the boost it needed. Senior fullback Steve Godfrey broke a tackle and shook loose of another with a stiff arm on his way to a 73 yard touchdown run. Astronaut led 10-7 with 4:35 left. “Steve came through with the big play when we needed it. We’d be done if wasn’t for him and our defense,” said Astronaut Coach B. Mack. Godfrey was the lone bright spot for a War Eagle offense that gained 249 yards. He had 153 of those yards on 13 carries.

In the 4[sup]th[/sup] quarter, St. Petersburg tied the game at 10 on a 24 yard field goal with 8:58 remaining. For the rest of regulation, the teams could not move into scoring range. Keith Mack threw 2 interceptions and the St. Pete quarterback threw one.

In the overtime, the War Eagles were on offense first. Matthew Mack rushed 7 yards on first down. On 2[sup]nd[/sup] down, Godfrey barreled in for a 3 yard run and a 17-10 lead. St. Pete then took over with 4 downs from the 10 to score a touchdown. A first down pass was incomplete. A second down run was stopped for a 2 yard loss. On third down, St. Pete’s quarterback overthrew a wide open receiver in the end zone, missing a golden opportunity for a score. This then set up 4[sup]th[/sup] down on the 12 yard line. Astronaut got to the quarterback, sacking him and ending the game.

“This was a tough win. The opponents will just keep getting better as we move on,” Said B. Mack. “We are lucky to move on, the way we played offense tonight.”

HOMESTEAD ENDS WAR EAGLE STREAK

HOMESTEAD—Keith Mack sat on the bench by himself in disbelief. The Junior couldn’t believe it was over. Everything came crashing down for the Astronaut War Eagles Friday night as they were blown out by Homestead 38-17. The War Eagles finish the season 12-1 and suffer their first loss since the 1982 2[sup]nd[/sup] round of the playoffs. The 26 game win streak was the longest in school history, and 2[sup]nd[/sup] longest amongst Brevard schools (Merritt Island won 32 in a row from 1978-1980). Homestead moves onto play Pensacola Escambia for the Class 3A state title that the War Eagles won just a year ago.

Homestead scored the only points of the 1[sup]st[/sup] quarter with a 42 yard field goal with 4 minutes left. They then took a 10-0 lead with a 10 yard touchdown pass with 9:42 left in the half. Matthew Mack, who carried just 8 times for 77 yards got things going for the War Eagles. He broke a 30 yard run followed by an 18 yard effort to set up 1[sup]st[/sup] and goal on the 3 yard line. On the next play, his brother, quarterback Keith scored on a 3 yard bootleg run with 5:53 left.

Homestead moved quickly and answered with a 6 yard run with 4:01 left in the half. The War Eagles moved the ball to the Homestead 10 and settled for a 27 yard Kurt Aken field goal as time expired. The War Eagles trailed 17-10 at halftime.

“I felt we were in good shape,” said Astronaut Coach B. Mack. “I didn’t think the wheels would fall off in the 2[sup]nd[/sup] half.”

Things looked promising in the third quarter as the War Eagles recovered a Homestead fumble with 9:06 remaining. However, the War Eagles with the ball at midfield couldn’t capitalize. Fullback Steve Godfrey fumbled on 1[sup]st[/sup] down and Keith Mack fell on the ball for a 2 yard loss. Then Mack was sacked for an 8 yard loss and threw incomplete on 3[sup]rd[/sup] down. “That was the turning point. A championship team has to turn that field position into some kind of points,” said B. Mack.

Homestead then drove down for a 1 yard touchdown run with 4:06 remaining in the third staking a 24-10 lead. The War Eagle offense struggled to get anything going. Keith Mack was hit on a 3[sup]rd[/sup] and 7 pass attempt with the ball falling incomplete late in the third.

Homestead went for the kill in the 4[sup]th[/sup] quarter. A 42 yard touchdown pass with 9:08 left put them up 31-10. After turning the ball over on downs Homestead drove in for a 1 yard touchdown run and a 38-10 lead with 6:12 left.

The final points of the game may have been a fitting farewell for the defending state champs. Keith Mack found his brother Matthew for a 63 yard touchdown pass with 4:21 remaining. “It may be the last time they play together, so I guess they’ll have that memory,” said their father B. Mack. “But it was a losing effort so I’m not sure it’s much consolation.” Matthew finished with 3 receptions for 105 yards in addition to leading the War Eagle’s ground game.

REEL/DYNASTY TALK:

Titusville beat Ft. Pierce Central in the opening round. They then lost 21-9 to St. Petersburg in the 2[sup]nd[/sup] round, their first playoff loss in 9 games. I was a 19 point dog in the St. Petersburg re-enactment game so it was surprising I won on such difficulty. St. Petersburg beat Homestead by 3, so I was a 16 point dog. I thought, hey, I won as a 19 point dog so maybe I can win this one. But the wheels just fell off. Young Keith couldn’t stand up to the pressure they brought.

It wouldn’t have mattered anyway. The potential state championship game would have had me sitting as a 52 point dog. St. Petersburg lost the championship by 33 points to Pensacola Escambia and their sophomore sensation running back, Emmitt Smith.

DYNASTY TALK:

When I approached these last few years and how I would introduce Sons of Mack, a few things went through my mind. First of all, every Mack that gets introduced will be recruited as an athlete. Sometimes I recruit an athlete, that could be a Mack-son but they do not end up being such. I’ve been and I will be very selective with certain years. Other years, where I have the ability to bring in a Mack family member I will let happen randomly, and not be too selective on the position or attributes that person has. For instance when I NEED a quarterback that athlete has to have more than minimal throwing power so they will convert to a quarterback. In the random years look for some Mack’s to come in as linebackers/receivers/etc. I.e. When the reel War Eagles have a quarterback that I do not want to supplant I will just convert the athlete to whatever their highest and best use will be, and they will follow along their career accordingly.

When I bring a Mack recruit in, the first year they are always redshirted. This is their 8[sup]th[/sup] grade year. Then they progress in attributes as the game has them progress. The only thing I will adjust is I will make sure their speed attribute is not more than who I believe the fastest players on the team are. For instance, when Matthew came in, his game given speed was higher than the speed attribute I had Scott McConico at. I lowered Matthew to 1 point below that.

Because I bring them in as recruits I sort of have to look ahead to what years they will be in the dynasty. For instance, Matthew came in as a running back (highest and best use) and I kept him as such. When I looked to the years he would be a junior and senior, the leading rusher both years was Steve Godfrey, a Fullback (600 yards and 670 yards). So I figured there was not a dominant tailback during those years, and Matthew could flourish in that role. When I got to the details of those years, I saw that they had spotty tailback play, no one was really dominant. So Matthew fit right in as the starter.

When it comes to Keith, I flip flopped a bit. Originally, Keith was a quarterback, and I was bringing him in as such as a junior in 1984. This was the first year where I thought I qb replacement could be in order. Through 1983 the War Eagles had all-state caliber quarterbacks in all but 1 year. What I mean by that is, the starter was all-state at some point in their career (either junior or senior year). But then I had a change of heart. Clark Cook, the actual starter, through for 700+ yards in 1984 as a junior. I looked at his 1985 passing numbers and they were not that impressive. However, I saw in an article from the Orlando Sentinel that he had 500 rushing yards through 8 games in 1985. So I got to thinking, well maybe he was a more of a running threat, so maybe I should keep him as QB. So then I moved the Keith player to a defensive back in his redshirt year. (I even questioned if I would even keep Keith as a player, because I was limiting the number of Mack-son’s to 5 at most).

Subsequent to that, I began to get to the details for those years. And the article was wrong. Cook had nowhere near 500 yards rushing and was not a running threat at all. So then the next time I had position changes I put Keith back to QB.

And then there is Brodie Mack. Oh you don’t know about Brodie? Brodie is B. Mack’s third son. He will start at quarterbck for the freshman team in 1985. Taller than both of his brothers. A better arm than Keith. And faster than Matthew. Let’s just say he and fellow 8[sup]th[/sup] grader Bruce McKinney just got done running roughshod over the Brevard County Middle school basketball scene in the 1984-1985 school year. Kicked some ass in track too.

In February 1984, Space Shuttle Challenger launches for the 10[sup]th[/sup] space shuttle mission. A few days later two astronauts make the first untethered spacewalk. In August, Space Shuttle Discovery makes its first voyage. 1984 also saw the first Canadian in space and the first woman to make a spacewalk.

The War Eagle football team rolled through the regular season on a record setting streak. However, they ran into a brick wall in the state semifinals. Matthew Mack’s varsity career ends with a 36-3 record over 3 years. His father wonders if his War Eagle team can ever match this success. With the loss of a record 34 seniors, it seems to be against all odds…

This is such an awesome dynasty, sorry about the playoffs, but it was a good season! Love the background dynasty talk about sons of Mack.

Thanks. At least the loss saved me a huge beat down from Emmitt Smith. This was a good run. I should have won that 2nd round game in 1982 that I lost 10-9. That would have given back to back in 82-83 and gotten a win streak at around 35 to beat Merritt Island's record. The state record at the end of 1984 was 40 by all-black school Euclid High in the 1940's http://articles.orlandosentinel.com/2006-10-01/sports/EUCLID01_1_euclid-deland-high-purple-tigers

Also, at that time Merritt Island's streak was the 3rd longest in state history at 30. Now it ranks 13th. Euclid's streak now rank's 6th.

Because there were no playoffs until the 1960's Euclid's 40 games is also the regular season record for win streaks at this point in time. I'm at 25 in the dynasty. So I'll be chasing that.

SEPTEMBER 1985
SPACE COAST FOOTBALL SEASON PREVIEW
ASTRONAUT WAR EAGLES
HEAD COACH: B. MACK (14[sup]th[/sup] year, 129-23, 1 State Championship, 4 Sectional Championships, 8 Regional Championships, 9 district championships)
CLASS/DISTRICT: 3A, 5
1984 RECORD: 12-1 (Sectional, Regional, District Champions)
Roster Size: 40 (10 seniors, 18 juniors, 12 sophomores)

YOUNG WAR EAGLES FACE NEW DISTRICT FOES

The Astronaut War Eagles will have an uphill climb to get back to the lofty perches they held the last two years. Gone are 34 seniors from last year’s 12-1 team which reached the state semifinals. The War Eagles will only have 10 seniors to lead them this year. Only 1 starter on either side of the ball returns.

That starter is Senior quarterback Keith Mack. Mack, the son of Astronaut Coach B. Mack, was the only junior starter on last year’s team. “He’ll have to be the leader. No doubt,” said his B. Mack. Keith completed 79 of 137 pass attempts for 1200 yards in 13 games. He threw for 9 touchdowns against 9 interceptions. While not a major part of the running game, he did rush for 5 touchdown.

Joining him in the backfield will be speedy tailback Joe Britt. As a sophomore Britt was third on the team in rushing with 489 yards and 6.2 yards per carry average. “Joe’s very fast. We think he’ll be our main big play threat on offense, but with our lower numbers this year we’ll have to play him at defensive back as well.” The 5 foot 8, 168 pound junior will also return kickoffs and punts.

Also, expected to see plenty of time in the backfield are fullbacks Ken Watson and Greg Hovis. The 6 foot 2, 215 pound Watson is a major college prospect. “He can play fullback, tight end, defensive end, and linebacker,” says Mack.

“I’m not sure how our defense is going to be. We’ve got almost zero varsity experience on our two deep roster,” says Mack. “I think our guys are very fast though. Where we may have relied on size in the past we will rely on speed.” Some players to watch are junior defensive ends Brian Waters and Jeff Boyd and junior linebacker Leroy Berry. “So far in practice, wherever the ball goes, you’ll find Leroy,” said Mack.

For the first time since 1976 the War Eagle’s will not be in the same district as crosstown rival Titusville. “We’ve had to move the game from the last week of the season because of the new classifications and district setup.” The FHSAA has added a classification this year. “Some of the coaches think it’s all about money,” says Mack. “The FHSAA gets a portion of each playoff game’s ticket sales. With more classifications there are more playoff games.”

The War Eagles will be in a 6 team district, with Brevard teams Rockledge and Cocoa Beach. The other foes come from 3 different counties: Orlando Jones form Orange, Leesburg from Lake, and St. Cloud from Osceola. “It adds some miles to the away games that’s for sure,” said Mack.

Astronaut at Sanford Seminole

WAR EAGLES OPEN WITH SHUTOUT

SANFORD-Astronaut outgained Sanford Seminole 300 to 66 to wins its season opener Friday night. The War Eagles were dominant on both sides of the ball in the 31-0 win.

In the first quarter, Hubert Williams returned a Sanford punt 29 yards to the 14 yard line. On the next play junior tailback Joe Britt swept in for a 14 yard touchdown. Astronaut lead 7-0 with 5:12 left. Then after a Sanford punt pushed the War Eagles back to their own 16 yard line, Britt capped off a long drive with a 38 yard touchdown run. Fullback Ken Watson cleared the way as Britt went around left end on the 8 play 84 yard drive.

Watson continued his punishing blocking in the 2[sup]nd[/sup] quarter when he paved the way for Greg Hovis to score on a 3 yard run with 4:36 left. Astronaut enjoyed a 21-0 halftime advantage. The War Eagles rushed for 184 yards led by Britt’s 83 yards on 11 carries.

In the third quarter, Wilber Rodwell recovered a Sanford fumble at the 28 yard line. On the next play, Britt took a screen pass from Senior quarterback Keith Mack and went 26 yards before being pushed out of bounds at the Seminole 2. However, the War Eagles could go no further as two rushes were stopped cold and a third down pass was dropped in the endzone. Roy DeYoung came on to put through a 20 yard field goal with 6:38 left in the third quarter.

In the 4[sup]th[/sup] quarter, Astronaut’s 2[sup]nd[/sup] unit offense put together a scoring drive when sophomore Johnny Brown scored on a 3 yard run with 2:19 remaining.

“This was a good opener. We are young so getting success early for these guys will be good for their confidence,” said Astronaut Coach B. Mack.
