The more I think about the Dansby signing, the more I question what the Browns were thinking (shocker, I know). He might be a small step up from DQ, but he'll be 33 in November and the deal is front-loaded with $10M the first year. To me, it seems like an oddly structured contract for an old dude who's really only had 1-2 monster years, to me.

I don't know what to think about Dansby, but I disagree a little on how it is structured. I look at it as they are paying him for the next two years when he is most likely and will be expected to be good and to contribute, then he will be cut or the Browns will be getting a deal if he is still a solid player in the back half of the contract. I would have been more pissed if the deal was spread out and they have to take the cap hit in year 3 and 4 when he sucks or is cut. I would be shocked if he makes it past his second year.

I dont think the 10 mil means what you guys think it means.

The contract details I'm seeing show a base salary of 4 Mil in 2014 and 2015, and base 5 Mil in 2016 and 2017. 4 Mil + 6 Mil Signing Bonus = 10 Mil in Year 1.

Yeah I must have been looking at wrong info then. Because I saw something different.

Players get old and overpaid, so they get cut (unlike stupid ass Pittsburgh trying to live off Polly Polly's past glory)

Not very pleased with Denver's Free agency...

They let Wesley Woodyard go to NE. Woodyard was the type of player that I love having because he is affordable, was a team captain, and always made an impact without the star price tag. Denver has enough depth at ILB that it wasn't necessary to sign him, but having NE sign him hurts.

Essentially paid more for Aqib Talib than DRC was asking. HMMMMM, not sure how I feel about this, because it still leaves Denver needing another corner. Would have preferred to see Denver sign DRC for less than Talib and then pick up an additional corner. DRC proved he can play well for Denver, Talib has not and also has more of a questionable history IMO.

Picked up TJ Ward for a good deal, especially considering what Donte Whitner signed for, and he's definitely at a position of need... but IMO hard-hitting strong safeties are out of style in this league. 5 career interceptions in 4 full seasons ain't gonna cut it for me. For comparison, Jairus Byrd averages nearly 5 INTs a year. NFL these days might as well start 2 free safety types and 3 solid CBs. Getting a "hard hitting" classic strong safety means fewer turnovers and more "targeting" penalties.

Now they are talking about Signing Jared Allen or Demarcus Ware, both old as fuck and one dimensional, IMO. If you want a pass rushing specialist you should have signed Dumervile last year or just picked whatever hybrid 240lb OLB that runs a 4.6 in this year's combine.

Had something longer typed up, but here's how I feel.

Woodyard: would have liked to see him stay, but he wasn't good last year and fell out of favor with the coaches. Oh well.
Talib: terrible signing. Going to bite the Broncos at some point. Just have to hope they can get good production before Peyton retires. When he's on, he's really freaking good though.
Ward: Eh. I generally agree about wanting cover safeties, but I could see him being played as a LB/S hybrid more than a true safety - we use nickel a lot.
Ware/Allen: depends on the numbers, but I generally agree. Broncos could use more pass rush, but there are probably more cost effective ways to do it.

I'm curious to see what else the Broncos do. They picked up DRC late last year, if I remember correctly. And the under the radar guys have worked out pretty well in the past, too (Phillips). So there's still time to make this better.

smh @ Broncos fans

Talib is better than DRC and that's why he's being paid like it

I actually agree with that, fool. The problem is that Talib is a head case and injury prone. To me, he's more talented than DRC to me. The problem is that he has so many other question marks besides talent.

Wat. They extended him and he took a massive 2014 paycut. He's a shell of hisself but still graded out as a top 10 safety this year.

$30M for Ware? Good job, good effort Broncos. Gotta hope we win a Super Bowl this year probably.

Srsly though, Polly should fucking retire before he embarrasses himself further.

And Talib was incident free last year in Belichek's sweat shop. He also locked down the best TE in footbaw (6'7 Jimmy Graham) better than anyone else ever has.

Denver right now reminds me of when the Lakers got the Mailman and the Glove.

Can't help but see a colossal collapse.

The Broncos offense will still be explosive next year. These additions on defense will help, and if they all stay healthy, I think there's a good chance they get back to the SB.

Kind of depends what the Patriots do. Do they get Revis? Do they add a couple targets for Brady?

You didnt actually watch the Seahawks did you....
I'm not Bill Walsh but I did notice that they have numerous undersized and oversized players thriving in their defense. Also have numerous PED suspensions. I guess they're just good at coaching misfits instead of the prototypical great athletes or something like that.

Well my point was more at the fact Kam Chancellor is not a deep coverage safety. They play alot of 1 high with Thomas and use Kam to cover TEs.

You're right. Should've said Thomas plays deep instead of both of them.

Criticizing teams with 35+ year old QBs because of what the cap looks like three years from now. GJGE trolls. Of course they're in win now mode.

Instead they should let Brees or Manning walk and hope to draft the next Russell Wilson? Going to guess the number of 2nd round or later QBs who don't do jack squat in the NFL vastly outweighs the number who led a team to a Super Bowl.

Only 35 players and that doesn't include the recent signings
And how many of those 35 are starters? By my count with the signings of Byrd and Thomas the Saints already have 15 of 22 projected starters signed for next year. Add, what, $22 Million in cap hits for Byrd, Thomas, and Graham and the Saints sit at $130 with 16 starters signed. And a number of the remaining 20 players are key contributors to depth on the defensive line. But hey, what do I know that you haven't covered in drive-by "analysis" and trolling. That cap in 2017 looks ugly. Blow it up now and hope you can find another franchise QB!

Tell me how moving on from the last franchise QB has gone for the Dolphins, Broncos, Cowboys, 49ers. Not on the here and now. Give me a run down of the five or so years after Marino, Elway, Aikman, and Young moved on. Of course it is win now. The Saints had "no cap room, LMAO" this year according to you and they just upgraded the FS position with a three time second-team All-Pro. I'm glad we had your solid analysis of how the Saints couldn't bring anyone in and instead had to cut three guys coming off injuries in their 30's.

Browns Twitter absolutely blowing up that Cleveland allegedly offered 3 first round picks for Tom Brady. Plus this:

http://www.reddit.com/r/Browns/comments/208i20/the_rumor_that_were_trading_for_a_hof_qb/

So, I see that the guy who made that thread earlier deleted it. For the record, I don't have a throwaway, it wasn't me.
I really hadn't wanted that rumor to leak just yet, for a couple reasons. First, it's very raw, very unconfirmed. I hate seeing rumors leak early, because they can have an effect on the outcome. For example, I didn't let the Lombardi thing leak, or the Shanahan hire leak, until I was convinced the team was passed the point of no return.
I'm going to try and be as honest and direct as I can with this while not screwing it up or over committing.
  1. I've heard this rumor for a week or so from various circles.
  2. It fits with the narrative on a few other unrelated realities and rumors that I've heard lately.
  3. Nothing is confirmed, because I don't think the "deal" is as far along as he made it seem.
  4. I'm not convinced that the guy who posted that thread really knows any of this. He really may have made a lucky guess on something based in an actual rumor. I don't know many people who've actually heard about any of this. I'm also not entirely convinced that he isn't trying to get me to bite on it in hopes of trolling or something. But, he got too close to the mark on something I've been trailing, and it's made me really uncomfortable.
  5. I haven't heard a specific name, which further pushes me away from reporting it at all.
  6. No one source has given up the full story on what may or may not be happening. One says "I hear the Browns may be working on a major draft trade", another "The Browns are looking into bringing in a legit QB option". None of it together, but from an aerial perspective, something starts to take shape.
  7. I really wanted to let this develop a lot more before I said anything.
  8. I'm not convinced anything will happen, or that various strands even connect into this one narrative. They COULD, but they could also just as easily not.

DONE DEAL?!?!?!?!

For the record, this is a degree of outrageousness as far as rumors go that I previously thought was unreachable and to be totally honest, I'm just happy to be alive for it

Cutting 19 players to create cap room is exactly what you did. Keeping the team intact, tagging Graham and signing anyone wasn't possible. Cutting multiple starters from last year made that possible. When Nick Toon is your 3rd receiver you aren't upgrading. I am sure you know the starters better than I, if you have 15 then great, depth and special teams is going to take a hit even with a great draft.

I have never said it was the wrong thing to do and the Saints probably didn't have any other choice. Last week this was the path they chose with the franchise tag. With this signing the Saints can pull the franchise tag off Graham and let him become a free agent. If they choose to keep Jimmy the cap hit for those 3 in 2015 will probably be a lot higher than 22 million (still depends if he is a TE/WR). The Byrd deal cannot be front loaded so the money is going to have to hit in years 2-6

You are right no team has ever moved on from a franchise quarterback.

Rodgers and Favre...I knew it was coming a mile away

I'm still waiting for you to tell us what starter we lost.

Please say Jenkins so I can laugh some more.

By my quick count Harper, Greer, Moore, Meacham, Collins and Sproles all started at least 5 games.

Some of them were forced onto the field because of injuries but there is still an impact and loss with depth.

Greer is a fucking cripple now and on the wrong side of 30. Sucks, but it happens in the game.

greerinj.gif

Sproles is still on the team right now (could be traded). We also have 3 other RBs who are starting caliber, one of them a former Heisman winner.

Moore was replaced with Stills.

Meachem was 4th or 5th on the depth chart

Collins might be resigned. If not, we mostly play 3-4 wr sets without a FB. I form is antiquated.

Can't wait to give Rodgers the Byrd

lol @ having "3 other RBs of starting caliber," that really means you have 0 RBs of starting caliber... and you are fixing to get rid of the best of them.

On the franchise qb issue it has happened if teams know what the fuck they are doing

Montana - Young
Favre - Rodgers
Brees - Rivers?
Manning - Luck
Bledsoe - Brady
