100% True Story Time.
My high school defensive coordinator was a really strange dude and before 10th grade he told me "Son, you'll always be like the 20th best player on the team... so if you ever want to make a contribution you need to embrace special teams (long snapper here I come!) and become like the ALBINO RHINO and learn to play every single position." He then regaled me with tales of his time playing with Mecklenburg in college, lol. He was never the best player, but his versatility to play a bunch of positions meant that a 12th round pick became a decade long starter in the NFL. I heard so many ALBINO RHINO stories for the next 4 years!
So I took his advice and learned to play TE, Tackle, Guard, Center (LONG SNAPPER!), DE, DT, NT, and MLB. I tried OLB early on as well, but by the time I was a senior the 4-4 variant was more like a 4-2-5 because spread offenses were becoming prevalent, so I was too slow to play what was essentially safety/linebacker hybrid.
He was 100% right too. I started several varsity games at center and guard as a sophomore (and got killed) because of injuries to older players. I started the first 2 games as a junior at center before getting injured. As a senior I played Tackle early in the season and then switched numbers and played TE for the end of the year due to injury to the starter. On defense I ended up playing half the year as MLB and half the year as NT, depending on who was hurt and where I was less of a liability! If I had stuck with my preferred position (TE) I would have started maybe 4 games after our starter got hurt. I was basically the Douglass Tagg of my generation... Loathsome AF, but willing!
I took this lesson into my reel life too! It's tough because the world values specialists. Specialization is awesome if you're the best at something, but specialists miss out on a lot of less than ideal opportunities that a generalist will have access to. At my current company I definitely have a strong area, but I also made it a point to learn how to be at least adequate at every aspect of our business.
