Obviously this race is way out of order, but it's where I am currently. The results won't be posted until the right point in the thread. I will be all caught up by the next stream. This will be the 2nd stream of this game for me. The 1st seemed to go well on my side of things. Not expecting many if any people, but gotta start somewhere. I run the race anyway so might as well stream it right? I have only streamed some MLB: The Show games and this so I'm new to it all. Won't get any flash here, just racing in real time.

"Race Recap"
Joe Ruttman was the car to beat early on, but once he got past by Dale Earnhardt around the half way point he never seen the front of the pack again though he hung around for a nice 3rd place finish. It's going to be hard to top last years rookie crop, but these guys have talent with Ruttman leading the way, but 3 of last years Rookie of the Year contenders finished in the top 10 today with Jody Ridley finishing 6th, Bryan Dehn finishing 8th and Lake Speed finishing in 10th proving last years record smashing season for the rookies was no fluke. Bryan Dehn, Darrell Waltrip and Dale Earnhardt was the class of the field late in the race and Dale Earnhardt won the battle to take home the checkered flag. Darrell Waltrip has a victory and two 2nd place finishes along with 2 poles in the last 3 Riverside races. There was 2 cautions for 5 laps and 6 drivers exchanged the lead 9 times during the race.

"#23 Bryan Dehn's Day"
Terrible qualifying effort, but it is nice to take advantage of the new provisional rules. The car was good and got the track position we needed on the 1st caution by staying out and pitting under yellow to get into the top 5. We lead a bunch of laps and had a 3rd place finish locked up until I got off the course a little bit and it cost me 5 spots, but I'll take the 8th place finish and look forward to running in my 2nd Daytona 500 and hopefully my nerves won't cost me a great finish like they did last year.

"Race Recap"
Pit strategy helped #23 Bryan Dehn win this one when he came into pit with 22 laps to go under the second caution period he was able to preserve his fuel and go onto victory while everyone else in the field had to make a gas and go stop with 5 laps remaining.

I qualifyed terribly again this week and thank you for a good smart pit strategy to lock me into the 500. If not for that this car would be going up onto the trailer and we would be heading home. Other than my qualifying woahs so far this season the car has been strong under race conditions and I can only do my best to keep the car clean and hopefully come home with a top 10 finish on Sunday.

Everybody, but their grandma shared the lead in this one, but all, but 5 of the last 30 laps belonged to the front row starters as Bobby Allison crossed the line first for the second time in the Daytona 500. 15 different drivers lead at least 1 lap in to start off the first 18 laps of the race when the first caution flag flew. The next 30 laps would see #90 Jody Ridley, #3 Richard Childress and #6 Joe Ruttman exchange the lead back and forth amongst other drivers until the half way point in the race. Ruttman and Ridley would be joined by Allison, Waltrip and #9 Bill Elliott for the next 20 laps until lap 71 when #71 Dave Marcis would be the last drive that didn't start in the top 3 to lead a lap. Under caution #23 Bryan Dehn would lead 4 laps, but the race to the checkered flag would be between Darrell Waltrip and Bobby Allison with a host of lapped cars blocking the way. There was 3 cautions for 12 laps and 25 drivers exchanged the lead 62 times.

"#23 Bryan Dehn's Day"
After a great qualifying run I stayed up front for a few laps before falling to the back of the pack expecting the big wreck to take out half of the field. It did happen and I was able to avoid it going through the infield grass, but it only effected a few cars. I lost the pack soon after retaking the green flag and fell back to 27th, but taking only 2 tires during the next 3 pit stops and getting some luck finding the fast car of Darrell Waltrip got me back into contention and even more luck fell as Darrell, Bobby and I had passed the start/finish line on pit road before the debris caution came out leaving just the 3 of us on the lead lap even though Bill Elliott pitted with us his pit stall was before the line and had to stay behind the pace car 1 lap down and finally leading a lap with just 20 to go. I made my lone mistake of the race anticipating the group to slow down for a slower car and came down on Kyle Petty bringing out the last caution and effectively taking me out of a 3rd place finish for the 2nd week in a row. I'll still take 4th place and have finished in the top 5 in each of my 2 Daytona 500's so far, but still don't have quite the car to contend for the win. We built a Oldsmobile to run on the drafting tracks to help my lack of power at these tracks and it seemed to help as I was able to make up the 15 second difference I was behind the leaders early on.

#23 Bryan Dehn was able to pull away as #11 Darrell Waltrip and #28 Bobby Allison battled side by side for the first few laps until Waltrip was able to get away and track Dehn down passing him on lap 9. Waltrip would go on to lead 126 of the next 127 laps before issues with #2 Dale Earnhardt on pit road would end his day putting him 2 laps down to the leaders. Earnhardt would assume the lead and put on a show as Waltrip's team mate #10 Cale Yarborough would follow behind in 2nd place, but never really mounted much of a challenge as Earnhardt wins 2 of the first 3 races of the 1981 season. There was 4 caution flags for 20 laps and 6 drivers lead a lap exchanging the lead 6 times.

"#23 Bryan Dehn's Day"
What can I say. Got my first career pole and lead some laps before falling to 4th and getting to ride around and click off some laps, but I didn't expect the #28 to pit so soon and made that mistake costing me the race. After that with engine issues I battled back in the low 20's for the rest of the day just hoping the car would hold up long enough to cross the finish line and I did, but not without another issue with 20 laps to go hurting some other cars in the process.

"Race Recap"
#33 Hary Gant out battled #11 Darrell Waltrip and #40 Joe Booher to cross the finish line first today moving him into the top 10 in the season standings. Outside of that 3 way battle it was an ugly race as the cautions would fall during green flag pit stops even putting Waltrip a lap down at one point while the Gant and Booher cars were able to stay out longer during the fuel run to keep them on the lead lap. #16 David Pearson the wily veteran would have a horrific crash early on in the race and it seemed as though he underestimated the speed of the slower car and it looked as though he never made an attempt to get out of the way even though he had plenty of track to get by. Pearson ended up flipping down the front stretch and got hit by several other cars along the way. Though he was not injured in the crash he will have to take a look at what he has left in the tank to see if he still has what it takes to be safe and get the job done on the track. There was 7 cautions for 27 laps and 9 drivers exchanged the lead 28 times during the race.

"#23 Bryan Dehn's Day"
I got put a lap down very early in the race due to a caution during green flag pit stops. I had stayed out on the track while everyone else pitted after the lap 4 caution giving me a couple laps lead, but that forced my hand and put me a lap down when I had to pit earlier than the rest of the field later on. I thought I had gotten it back at one point when the caution came out while I was right behind the Harry Gant while he was leading and he ducked into pit road, but I was held behind the pace car and wasn't allowed to drive around the track and get my lap back. As it turns out I stayed true to my plan and ended up with a top 10 finish despite never having another chance to get ahead of the leaders. So all in all it's wasn't a bad day even though I was never a contender for the victory.

#53 Slick Johnson was injured in todays race, but the extent of those injuries is unknown at this time. #16 David Pearson is as good as it gets as a driver, but something is a miss the past 2 weeks as he could of avoided both terrible wrecks he has caused. NASCAR has said that Pearson will not be allowed to race until they have determined what the problem is and if it can be fixed. #90 Jody Ridley dominated the race today and was looking for his 3rd career victory leading 84 laps, but after the final restart #11 Darrell Waltrip's team made just enough adjustments to his car and was able to take over the lead and win the race. There was 4 cautions for 16 laps and 13 drivers exchanged the lead 36 times during the race.

"#23 Bryan Dehn's Day"
I was having a good race today. After having a bad qualifying effort I was climbing up through the field slowly and got to within striking distance of the top 10 when I made a mistake trying to pass Bonnett there and put myself back to the back of the pack. Then as luck would have it I got turned around and my day was over.

"NASCAR Winston Cup Series News & Notes"

Due to the bad accident nearing the end of the Coca-Cola 500 at Atlanta this past Sunday the driver of the #53 Chevrolet, Slick Johnson has injuries that will force him out of action for the foreseeable future. Slick has broken both his legs and a couple ribs along with other minor injuries due to the crash in turn 1 on lap 155. It is estimated that he will be unable to think about climbing back into a car for 4 to 6 months from now. How long it will take Slick to get into a car and be healed enough to run a full race will quite possibly force him to miss the rest of the 1981 season as it will take him until the the Mountain Dew 500 at Pocono in July at the earliest to heal from his injuries, but that does leave him another 2 to 4 months before the season ends so it is possible he will be in a car before the season ends. Slick Johnson said that he will be back before the season ends no matter what. Even if he has to drive with a crutch on the accelerator.

David Pearson has pretty much been to blame for 2 bad wrecks the past 2 races that NASCAR thinks could have been avoided. The 1st wreck at North Carolina fortunately didn't hurt anyone and Pearson was on the rough end of that wreck, but this week Slick Johnson did sustain major injuries and NASCAR is holding Pearson back from racing until he can be cleared from his doctors that he is fit and capable to drive a race car. David Pearson released a statement saying that he is truly sorry that Mr. Johnson got seriously hurt at Atlanta and that he is fine and able to race and will do what is necessary to get back on the track in time for the CRC Chemicals Rebel 500 at Darlington in 4 weeks.

#42 Kyle Petty dominated this race leading 131 laps, but the late race cautions closed up the field and #88 Ricky Rudd was in the top 5 all day and was able to get past Kyle Petty on a restart and never looked back using the lapped cars on the inside line to block Kyle from mounting any come back. There was cars that would get too high up off of turn 4 and would hit the guard rail entrance to the inside of the track and would cause serious damage to the cars and others around them. The track officials and NASCAR will take a look into why the cars would get loose on the high end of the track and work to secure that guard rail to prevent any serious injuries in the future. There was 7 cautions for 34 laps and 8 drivers exchanged the lead 12 times during the race.

In a statement released prior to the start of today's race NASCAR officials and doctors have determined after a couple weeks of testing and monitoring that David Pearson is fit and of able mind to be behind the wheel of a race car and is still scheduled to attempt to qualify and compete in the CRC Chemicals Rebel 500 at Darlington next week.

With the dominating victory and the car troubles for #11 Darrell Waltrip, #28 Bobby Allison re-assumes 1st place in the season point standings with #2 Dale Earnhardt and #90 Jody Ridley not too far beh9ind making it a 4 driver race at this early point in the season. All, but 1 car was able to finish the race today as #21 Neil Bonnett's dismal season continues with a blown motor and was forced to finish in last. 2 drivers started their 1st ever NASCAR Winston Cup race today in #02 Mark Martin and #06 Ernie Cline. I wonder if either of these 2 men will find success at the top level? There was 3 cautions for 15 laps and only 3 drivers lead a lap exchanging the lead 6 times during today's race.

"#23 Bryan Dehn's Day"
I finished in the top 10 so my day couldn't have been too bad. I was fighting for a top 5 when Marcis spun me out. He was low on the track for laps as we battled side by side and I thought I gave him enough room low, but apparently he didn't see it that way. I am happy and thank the crew for fixing what damage I did have so I could battle my way back through the field and finish where I did as to not loose as many points as I could have or like I have been the last couple weeks.

Probably because I didn't put up my best lap times. I set the qualifying speeds to have me start around 10th if I put up an average of my better laps so If I nail it I can get a pole, but quite hard to do. The ratings are set as such that the field is very close to each other in qualifying so a bad lap will result in a bad starting spot. My sophomore year isn't going so good...

#28 Bobby Allison was his usual self leading the most laps and over half of the race before finding some type of miss fortune in the late stages to not be able to bring home the victory. #64 Tommy Gale seems to shine at the track too tough to tame as he lead 34 laps today and almost came home with the victory and last year in the spring race he lead 31 laps before finishing 4th after leading in the late stages of the race. #16 David Pearson showed everyone that he can still drive a race car after his debacles at North Carolina and Atlanta coming home with a 6th place finish. There was 3 cautions for 12 laps and 10 drivers each lead a lap exchanging the lead 18 times.

"#23 Bryan Dehn's Day"
I was running well got to lead some laps which I haven't done much of yet this year, but got put a lap down after a short pit stop running a bit too hard and scrubbing down my tires. On the restart there I got a little too antsy trying to get by Earnhardt. I knew I had a good enough car to get my lead back, but we touched just a little bit and it ended my day. I had another pole and I failed to deliver where it matters and that's where you finish the race and not where you start it.

"Race Recap"
#88 Ricky Rudd nearly won his 2nd short track race of the season, but the lapped cars proved to be too much to overcome as #40 Joe Booher pulled out in front of the lapped cars and cruised to his 1st career victory. Booher had a 2nd place finish at Atlanta last season when Rusty Wallace came out of no where to go to victory lane and he had a 3rd place finish at North Carolina this year where he lead 70 laps only to fall off at the end and a 3rd place finish at Bristol aswell. With Booher driving well he will try to compete the rest of the season in the D.K. Ulrich prepared car. #87 Gary Balough nearly put the #87 car in victory lane for the 2nd time in 2 years winning the pole and leading a bunch of laps early only to fall back in the middle of the race, but was able to hit his marks and come away with a 3rd place finish today. There was 7 cautions on the day and 10 drivers lead a lap exchanging the lead 19 times.

"#23 Bryan Dehn's Day"
I had a good car today even though qualifying didn't show it. I was clicking the laps away trying my best to mind my own business except for that 3 wide mess I got the other drivers into. Many others along with myself elected to pit a pit earlier to try and gain an advantage on the track, but I was greeted with the chrome horn of Donnie Allison which put many of us a lap down and ended any chance we had at a good finish. He got me back for turning him last year here so I can't really complain too much, but I'm sure my crew will be pretty vocal about it.

"NASCAR Winston Cup Series News & Notes"

Who would have imagined that #40 Joe Booher winning a race would cause controversy? Most people would ask who the hell Joe Booher even is, but the man has been on fire the past 2 seasons and it's looking more and more like it's for real and not a fluke. The #40 car owned by D.K. Ulrich has visited victory lane twice the past 2 seasons with Stan Barrett winning at North Carolina last season so it's not even that far fetched from a car owner stand point. Which leads me to ole Tim Richmond. He has struggled so far in the quest for "Rookie of the Year" in another D.K. Ulrich owned vehicle. It has been reported that Richmond is unhappy with his #99 team not performing up to the level that the #40 team is. It is said that Richmond has demanded that he be put into the #40 ride as he is the one with a future in this sport and 2 years from now no one will even remember how Joe Booher is. Not only because the #40 team is doing well, but they are also in the top 25 in owners points and have provisionals to use in case of a bad qualifying day which Richmond has had 3 of and has not been able to compete in the full allotted races this season. There is no word on what D.K. Ulrich has said in reply or what he plans on doing about the situation as of yet, but it would be hard for him to lose a driver that does show a lot of promise and could be talking the truth when it comes to him being the part of the future of NASCAR. On the other hand you can't just go switch what is working in Joe Booher and as long as he continues to perform why make the change?

#90 Jody Ridley has had the 2 worst flip and rolls in the past 2 years and wasn't able to qualify for the Daytona 500 last year, but went on to win at Richmond the very next week. It may seem like getting tossed around like a rag doll wakes him up and we will see what happens next week to see f this still holds true. Today's race was pretty clean with only the 2 big wrecks. #43 Richard Petty won the pole for the race, but once again has issues with his car and is forced to settle for a bad finish. Only Richard and #24 Cecil Gordon has started all of the last 41 races (1980 & 1981) and has not found victory lane. Unheard of for a man with 190 wins and 200 might just end up being a dream instead of what everyone thought would eventually be a reality. There was 2 cautions on the day and 20 drivers lead a lap exchanging the lead 56 times.

The Oldsmobile did really good today. We qualified 13th and finished 2nd. We were not able to lead a lap, but we stayed in front of the wrecks even though we tried and was almost put into 1 late in the race there. We were able to move up to 7th in points trying to stay close enough for if we can get on a run like the end of last year we will be right back into the think of the points battle.

The season points battle is tightening up with 4 drivers all within 100 points of leader, #28 Bobby Allison. #90 Jody Ridley almost pulled off the flip and roll the week before and come back to win the next week, but #44 Terry Labonte got by him to lead the only 3 laps of the race to win the race. Just a week after complaining about the lack of power from his car #99 Tim Richmond came home 11th. After his initial outburst everything has been hush, hush and we have no new news on the subject. There was 3 cautions on the day and 5 drivers exchanged the lead 10 times during the race.

"#23 Bryan Dehn's Day"
I was given a good car today. Again I wasn't able to lead a lap and my qualifying effort wans't very good, but I probably drove the cleanest race of my career and made my way up through the field battling Bobby Allison on last lap and getting past him for a 4th place finish. It's back to back top 5 finishes and I feel that the team and I are starting to get it together a lot sooner this season than last year. I feel my 1st victory of the season is not too far away if the crew keeps working hard to give me great cars, my father keeps making the right moves in the pits and I keep the nose clean and run within myself and not try to force the issue with all these other talented drivers on the track.

He wasn't able to extend his point lead much as #11 Darrell Waltrip and #2 Dale Earnhardt each had top 5 finishes, but he still keeps it and Labonte & Ridley are quickly making it a 5 horse race for the season points championship. There was the lone caution on the day and 6 drivers exchanged the lead 14 times during the race.

"#23 Bryan Dehn's Day"
What do I say about this one. We qualified 38th and worked our way into the top 10, but still managed to get put a lap down as did the whole field. We didn't have anything for the top 5 today and we were out there turning good laps and had avoided disaster a couple times during the race, but I wanted to be careful knowing #67 Buddy Arrington had a run on me and was going to go into turn 3 slow enough to fall back behind Allison and the group I was running with as they had a few lap better tires and was too busy looking in my rear view mirror instead of seeing Rudd come out in front of me and it was over then. Man what a way to end what could have been the first caution free race and what could have been a top 10 run. If I don't beat myself I think I can win a lot of races, but I just know if I have it in me to win championships with the lack of putting a full run together week in and week out.

"NASCAR Winston Cup Series News & Notes"

A few big changes amongst the NASCAR landscape as we head to the half way point of the season and the Winston Cup All-Star Race at Charlotte prior to the longest race of the season, The World 600. With rumblings around the D.K. Ulrich garage with an unhappy Tim Richmond which has had poor finishes and even missed a few races is way behind in the "Rookie of the Year" chase and was apparently not kidding when he spoke up a few weeks ago when his teammate won at Martinsville while his car hasn't been very competitive. The season started off great with a win in the UNO 125 race to put him in the 4th starting spot for the 1981 Daytona 500, but just a couple months later it has been confirmed that Richmond will be leaving D.K. Ulrich and replacing Donnie Allison in the Kenny Childers prepared #12 Buick taking his sponsor, UNO along with him.

12_Richmond.png

1981_T_Richmond_All_Star.png

As for Donnie Allison he has been trying to make each race so far this season and has done well including 2 top 5's and 3 top 10's so far this season, but the rigors of racing is catching up to the younger of the 2 Allison brothers as he is stepping away from the Childers crew after nearly a year and a half. Kenny Childers wants to try and run a full schedule while Donnie Allison has never run a full schedule and he says he don't intend to any time soon. So John Rebhan comes calling and says that no one has come forward looking to hop into his #77 Warren Fabricating sponsored Oldsmobile this year since running a few races last season with Kenny Hemphill behind the wheel as welcomes a big name driver to drive his car even if for only a few select races.

77_Allison.png

1981_D_Allison_All_Star_A.png

The last note to pass along involves the older Allison brother, Bobby Allison. Bobby has been running great so far this season for Harry Ranier and sits on top of the season points standings, but if you haven't noticed the team has had a sponsor change in the past few races from Tuf-Lon to The 5 Racers. Ranier and Co. has reached an agreement with Hardee's to finish out the season starting in the Winston All-Star race. With Burger King running nearly full time with Junior Johnson and Cale Yarborough and McDonald's getting limited exposure from Richard Childress it was a bit of a easy decision for Hardee's to jump on board in NASCAR.

It is now a 5 horse race all within 100 points of each other as we near the halfway point of the season. #19 Dick May nearly pulled off the huge upset leading a lot of laps late and managed to come home with a top 5 finish. "Video Recap"

"#23 Bryan Dehn's Day"
I had a good car today. It wasn't enough to win, but the strategy on pit road put me up front enough to steal the victory. I did get to lead a bunch of laps early from my solid qualifying effort and fell back a bit through the middle of the race clicking off laps and the 2 caution flags helped put me into position to conserve fuel and be the 1st one to take the checkered flag. Now that we got the 1st one out of the way this year we can focus on more good finishes and get back into the season points battle which we got a huge boost as Bobby Allison had some unfortunate issues.

"Race Recap"
Current season points leader, #28 Bobby Allison extends his lead a little bit by taking the checkered flag today. Early on there was a lot of action with many cars getting through the trouble without any major incident, but the 2nd half of the race proved difficult to navigate as many cars were taken out by not being able to get through the melee as fatigue seemed to set in driving nearly full throttle around the 1.5 mile track. The field set a new NASCAR record of 34 different leaders during the race (Statistics started in 1980). So far in 1981 there hasn't been nearly as many cautions, but today there was 8 yellow flags. There was 34 drivers each leading a lap exchanging the lead 69 times.

"#23 Bryan Dehn's Day"
I followed up my 1st victory of the season with a front row starting spot and was doing well staying near the back of the top 10 through out the race dodging the spinning cars, but I got tapped in the back by #99 D.K. Urlich getting me a bit loose and then tried to fall back in line, but I was too close to #48 James Hylton in front of me sending both of us for a long ride heading into turn 3. I finished 21st still on the lead lap after driving on my side along the wall for a while so it could have been worse.

"#23 Bryan Dehn's Day"
My day was good riding along in the top 5 for most of the day only having that one issue with Bobby Allison early on in the race that didn't effect either of us. I was riding in 2nd place behind Dale Earnhardt in the closing laps and waited until the final turn to make my move, but I caught Joe Ruttman coming on the inside and pushed the throttle down knowing the only way to win the race was to try and see if the car could hold the corner, but it didn't and I got into Earnhardt. I still finished in the top 5 though just two weeks after my first win of the season. I hope to have this continue and get back into the championship race with half the season left to go.

Some may say he is not too happy with his own decision to come back and run a full schedule this season. #11 Darrell Waltrip moved into 2nd place in the season points standings over taking #44 Terry Labonte with a 2nd place finish behind Allison by 112 points. There was 3 cautions for 12 laps and 8 different drivers exchanged the lead 12 times during the race.

"#23 Bryan Dehn's Day"
It took the entire 1st half of the race for me to work my way up to 2nd place, but could never make the last pass to get a lap lead. After a restart i fell back to 10th place and began to push my car too hard and spun effectively ending my day. I make a pit road mistake having to come in under green to serve the penalty putting me a lap down and then another lap down when I had to make my last pit stop with around 15 laps to go. Another frustrating big track race to say the least.

"#23 Bryan Dehn's Day"
Yes this race sums up my 2nd season for me. I am the first to admit that I am just not working hard enough. I am not doing the things that I need to do in order to be and stay competitive each and every week. I fell asleep behind the wheel today and missed my mark causing me to spin out. That wasn't the worst part though. I was fine and able to continue with a competitive car, but I spun the tires and ended my day and nearly half of my fellow competitors. I need to wake up and start working to not only be good on the race track, but to stop doing the stupid things that threaten the safty of the other drivers on the track including myself. I took a big hit today and I hope it was enough of a wake up call or my career will be cut very short.

Welcome back my friend! So good to see you back and posting :)
Thanks a lot! Having fun once again.

IRL, A 7-year old GoBlue attended his first NASCAR race here at the July race at Pocono.
I remember you posting about that back on the old forum. Well, it's here lol... I would have loved to see me some 80's NASCAR live. It wasn't until the late 80's early 90's I could even watch a full race.

I am all caught up now. 1 live stream down and had some issues with concentration with ppl watching. This season could be a real bad one lol....

It was a lot better because there was no BS debris cautions. Teams could actually gain an advantage over the field (ex. Ernie Elliott's engine program). Sure, half the field couldn't win. No lead was safe because the engines weren't bulletproof.

There was no "aero push" because the cars weren't going fast enough in the turns because there wasn't enough aerodynamic/mechanical grip to create the "aero push." You could pass cars in the corners because the tires wore out.

It was a much better era of racing.

Unless your Tiny Lund and ran the entire Daytona 500 on 1 set of tires lol...

Yeah I watch a lot of races around the year I am currently in. in 81 there was only a hand full I can find due to extremely limited TV coverage, but I get enough of the jist. Being from Wisconsin it was all short track. I got to see a lot of the eventual 80's - 90's stars before they were big which is cool. At times it can be a bit "boring" due to 1 car gaining 3-4-5 laps on the rest of the field. It was just different and I can appreciate all eras, but like 80's early 90's way more. The one thing I don't like now is it's all about riding around and trying to make your car right for the final 10-20 laps which feels like it's losing the quality/importance of the first 90% of the race. I'm not so sure if it's the race itself or just the way the announcers try to portray the race.

It's the way the race is "set-up" everyone knows by now there will be a "debris" caution with 20-30 laps to go and setup the TV finish.

"#23 Bryan Dehn's Day"
The car was not strong enough. I was able to hang around for half of the race before the engine started to go sour. And in my usual panic I made a huge mistake that not only cost me this race, but the next one at Michigan as well as I severely sprained my left foot and right wrist int he brutal accident. I am lucky to be alive and be able to race again, but it might not be at Michigan. That race is in 2 weeks so there is a good chance I will be able to start the race, but I might not be able to finish it.

I had yet another bad race. I wasn't able to react quick enough on 2 ovvasions today getting into the back of slowers cars with the 2nd one causing me a good finish. I don't understand why the yellow flag didn't come out, but thats NASCAR. It's up to me to get these bigger tracks down, but on the plus side they are done with for the year and I can get onto getting good finishes at the tracks I have run good on. Last year I made my season respectable and I plan on doing the same thing this year.

This was a good start for me getting back to the tracks I can run my best on. I got into issues getting put onto the end of the lead lap and caution flags and a loose car put me a lap down. I was able to race my way back onto the lead lap, but a caution never came out until it was my caution. A couple restarts later and I had no chance at a top 10 finish, but 12th is my first top 20 finish in 7 races.

Indianapolis Track Testing
August 29th & 30th, 1981

Indianapolis Motor Speedway
Indianapolis, Indiana

Indianapolis_Testing_1.png

In what seemed like just a pipe dream for many NASCAR had pulled their trailers through the fences onto the hallowed ground of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on August 29th, 1981 in an off week between the Busch 500 in Bristol and the Southern 500 in Darlington. 14 teams accepted the invite ranging across all 6 car manufactures in NASCAR and the best of the best NASCAR has to offer along with a couple drivers that had put many of miles on the track. This marks the first time ever that a NASCAR race car had turned laps on the world famous speedway.

Two years earlier in 1979 the story begins when Richard Childress had taken a detour on his way to Michigan to take his first ever look at the track. He just walked through an open gate and stepped up to the fence in turn 4 and said that there is no reason why NASCAR couldn't run on the track. (Real Life Link Here) Childress cited that they had been running at Ontario in California which is nearly an exact replica of Indy which hosted it's last race in 1980 before being shut down. With Texas World Speedway and the third Riverside race getting pulled from the NASCAR Schedule after 1981 that leaves only 29 races to run in 1982. John R. Cooper, a longtime NASCAR marketing executive, had just been appointed president of Indianapolis Motor Speedway at that time is now taking the first steps to allowing what many think is wrong by allowing NASCAR on the track and aggressively working towards adding a race to the NASCAR Winston Cup schedule possibly as soon as 1982.

Indianapolis_Testing_2.png

"Led by Childress himself here are a few of the cars going around the track during practice on August 29th"

Indianapolis_Testing_3.png

"Of course Bryan Dehn finds a way to end up in the wrong direction as he get's too much of the apron coming out of turn 2

On August 30th the 14 drivers put together a 32 lap race between themselves to see exactly what would happen with many cars in the draft and how long tires and fuel would last in a race type setting.

"Video Recap"
"First 10 laps"

It don't seem likely that a race will be held next year as it seems to be too soon to clear up a weekend at the track to coincide with the open dates on the Winston Cup schedule and there is talk that the Indy track officials will need some time to equip the track to hold such an event. There is talk of them inviting the top 35 in owners points sometime in April/May prior to the Indianapolis 500 next year for a near full field under race conditions to see what needs to be done with pit road and any other upgrades that may need to be done to the track facilities. No one knows when, but everyone expects it to be a for gone conclusion that in the very near future NASCAR will be beating each others fenders at Indy.

The season points chase is looking to be a big time battle Between #28 Bobby Allison and #11 Darrell Waltrip as Allison resumes the lead over Waltrip by 24 points with a 5th place finish today. #2 Dale Earnhardt takes over 3rd in the standings, but is 324 points back from Allison and needs to visit victory lane again to try and cut into that huge lead. I am fast at Richmond and I am bound to have some luck go my way.

There was 2 caution flags for 10 laps and 5 different drivers each exchanged the lead 11 times during the race.

I got what I needed today. It wasn't the win, but rather a strong, patient & within my limits race. It gave me the opportunity to run up front and get that lucky break to steal the victory away. I just need to get rid of that win on every lap mentality and stay within my talents and I will prove I can drive a race car.

I would assume so, but it was messed up with 4 drivers with provisionals to use not make it so I limited it to just the 2 cars in the top 10. Petty is in 15th so screw him. Damn 32 car fields.... I had been doing provisionals by better qualifying speeds, but next year I am doing by owners points which would have put up both in the show, but both Pettys missing so either way I was screwed.

I also considered no one buying in and racing as Richard Petty or someone, but thought against it

"NASCAR Winston Cup Series News & Notes"

Qualifying on Saturday was pretty eventful this week with only 32 cars to make the field. This caused 7 drivers able to use provisionals and only three positions to put them. Based on qualifying speeds this allowed #7 Dick Brooks, #43 Richard Petty and #52 Jimmy Means to make the field leaving #71 Dave Marcis, #23 Bryan Dehn (whom are in the top 10 in points) #15 Lake Speed and #42 Kyle Petty on the outside looking in. Those four drivers were scrambling to see if they could find new rides for the race.

Dave Marcis quickly paid a nice sum of money to drive the #53 Chevrolet for J.D. Johnson. Slick Johnson has been driving, but an injury at Atlanta earlier in the season has sidelined him for quite some time. Not fully 100% and another jolting wreck a couple weeks after returning has thought it was best to rest a week. Kyle Petty has done the same taking over for Bob McElle in the #99 D.K. Ulrich owned Buick. Lake Speed hasn't found a ride after failing in his qualifying attempt.

Bryan Dehn thought he wouldn't be able to find a ride either until Hal Needham came up and asked if he would drive the #22 Skoal Bandit Pontiac for him this weekend in the hopes of trying to get back into the top 25 in owner points for the rest of the season and the beginning of next year while keeping Dehns battle of finishing in the top 10 in the season points. Bryan Dehn had won at Martinsville last fall. Stan Barrett which won his very 1st race last year has had only 1 top 20 in the last 14 races and hasn't even qualified for the last two since rear ending his teammate at Darlington. They have since dropped out of the owners points battle by 108 points over #27 Benny Parsons.

"Race Recap"
#11 Darrell Waltrip had his worst qualifying effort of the season starting 15th, but also had his strongest race of the season dominating the race once he grabbed onto the lead completing 153 of the last 166 laps in 1st place. With #28 Bobby Allison dropping out of the race early the 62 point lead he had has now become a 57 point deficit to Waltrip. Morgan Shepherd was heard saying that he seen Petty on the track with no damage that late into the race so he figured it was time he was put in the garage because it just wouldn't be a race with the 43 car still on the track. Story is unconfirmed. There was 3 cautions for 12 laps and 9 different drivers exchanged the lead 19 times during the race.

"Video Recap"

"#23 Bryan Dehn's Day"
It was a good race. I am starting to get my bearings back. Kyle (Petty) can say he signaled and say this and say that, but I know that he gave me no warning and took out a lot of good cars for his failure to signal to someone that was on his ass, faster and on the damn lead lap. Other than that though the car has been running good, I have worked harder on being more patient and letting the race come to me and overall trying to have a bit more fun than worry and get pissed off about everything that happens on and off the track.
