Pac-12 Thread

What is your definition of player of the year? Most impactful or best player?
In my opinion it should be the player with the most impact. Reason for that is it's extremely hard to compare different positions when deciding the "best player" that's what the All Conference team is for.

Also think it's funny Thomas Duarte is 2nd team TE even though he isn't listed as a TE, never played as one and has a game nothing like a TE.

Paul had 109 tackles, 13 for loss. 3 forced fumbles, 1 returned for a TD. 3 sacks and 4 interceptions.

Buckner had 76 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, 9.5 sacks, 0 ints, 0 fumbles.

Paul impacted the game far more.
Buckner also broke up 5 passes (Paul 3) and had 6 quarterback hurries (Paul 1).

An argument can be made for both, but it wasn't like they gave it to some average dude over Paul. Since I've been watching Oregon, he had by far the most impact of any defensive lineman I've seen in a single season. I mean he had a good 5-10 plays a game where he made the offensive line look like high school boys, and he didn't seem to take plays off at all.

What's the name of the WR coach Helfrich hired from Duke when he moved Frost to OC/QB's? He'd be my guess as the most logical in house replacement TBH.
Sonny Lubick's kid. I think that makes sense. Oregon's WR depth and talent is ridiculous right now, so he's done a great job there.

When SC took the lead in the 3rd quarter, I was all ready to come here and post the clip from the end of Remember the Titans...."I know football....what you did with these kids......you're the right man for the job." Then the rest of the game happened. :(

But Helton woke up the next morning and cleaned house. Wilcox gone, along with DB, D-line, and O-line coaches. Helton totally redeemed hisself.

The other Four Families laughed when young Michael took over the Corleone Family, too.

But instead of killing David Shaw on the steps of a courthouse, trapping Jim Mora in a revolving door and shotgunning him to death, and killing Chris Petersen while he's fucking his mistress, Helton goes to town on his own staff.

Will be interesting to see what he ends up with.

Needed to trim the fat to get into fighting shape. The new hires -- particularly the DC -- will say a lot about what he can do with this job.

Yep. But I do like this sort of decisiveness. Many corches are reluctant to fire under-performing assistants because of personal ties, fear of the potentially negative repercussions of letting go a popular, if ineffective coach, or fear of that coach's replacement not being any better.

And even then, they don't usually clean house with multiple sackings.

The PAC12 shampship was a disappointment, even if totally expected, but I so far have been entertained and intrigued by the Clay Helton era at USC.

If the 40 pound box Stanford dropped on us was in any way the deciding factor in canning the defensive coaches, then it was worth it. If he was going to cut them loose regardless, well then the loss still sucks.

I just got around to watching the Trojan War 30 for 30 from 2 months ago. That SC-Texas game. Probably the greatest game I've ever seen. Definitely the greatest game I've ever been at in person. 10 years later seeing highlights.......still put a knot in my stomach. So, so, so many chances to put that game away. But much respect to Texas. They battled and earned it.

Still love Pete and Reggie too. NCAA can eat a bag of dicks. I was a student from 02 to December 04, and it was a fucking glorious time to be there.

Yeah, that 2006 Rose Bowl was the Thrilla in Manila of CFB games. So much hype, buildup, background, superstars being showcased, contrast between the fan bases of each team - and yet somehow the game managed to live up to all of it.

Still painful to watch Vince Young strut past Frostee Rucker into the end zone on that 4th down play.

Bruins get Stanford in the conference opener at home. Like it. Always would rather get them early in the year than late.

At ASU and Wazzu back to back, but in October. Break with the weather in Pullman that time of year.

Only on Thurs game at CU.

Oregon State week before SC. In Berkeley the week after.

Larry Scott visionary.

Nuttin up at College Station and Provo in non-conference.

Oregon State: Sources tell FootballScoop that Gary Andersen is adjusting offensive coordinator Dave Baldwin’s role and promoting Kevin McGiven and TJ Woods to co-offensive coordinators. Sources tell us they expect McGiven to call the plays next season.

Kenny Clark going pro. Should be a mid first round pick, imo.

best DL we had here since Brian Price.

Paul Perkins to the league as well. Think he'll be a real player for whoever drafts him. Can do it all and is exceptional in pass blocking.

Don't get it either.

And they're playing like shit as well.
I will not be surprised if San Diego State is the only SoCal side that is nationally ranked and USC does not get any votes in the final poll if this outcome holds. Absolutely insipid football from SC.

Man, I'm glad I thought twice before coming in here yesterday and ripping UCLA for being the only team to let the Pac12 down.

Helton era off to a bangin' start. When Bama pushes our shit in in Dallas, 0-3 baby!

Wisconsin looked well coached - or SC looked utterly predictable.

Outside of a handful of big plays that came out of superior athleticism or a broken play, SC's offense simply could not get unfucked. Every time they snapped the ball, a Badger defender was immediately there either in Kessler's face, or there to tackle the ballcarrier.

Defensively, the Trojans showed heart and made some nice plays, but in the end, they got worn down by the offense constantly going 3 and out.

As TM says, Helton is now 0-2 as the permanent HC.

Such timing, much bad luck on the Helton hire. At the time right after the UCLA win, it seemed a logical, if not very popular, and certainly not spectacular, hire. Then, Richt and then Kelly come available in the following month.

Ugh.

Well, the Pete Carroll Era got off to a slow start as well - USC was 6-6 in his first season there, and also lost the Las Vegas bowl against Utah.

USC was a far far worse team when Carroll took over. This years team should be able to just out athlete tons of teams.

Agreed - I was being sarcastic. Carroll's first USC team was starting Sunny Byrd, a third string fullback (!) at tailback, that's how depleted their running back corps was. But that team also had Carson Palmer, Troy Polamalu and Mike Williams. Juju Smith-Schuster is a reasonable facsimile of Williams, and Su'a Cravens has a similarly oversized role om the defense like Polamalu did, but Kessler is a far, far cry from Palmer.

Situations aren't comparable at all. Pac-12 was a pretty awful league back in those days. Hiring Carroll was a complete culture change. Lots of good coaches all across the league now, even at the weaker schools, and two established perennial top ten programs (although Stanford and Oregon have had a shaky year each). They needed to hire a great coach and should have waited instead of hiring a guy based on a twitter campaign. Lots going wrong there. That they lost 6 games with that talent is horrible. The current holdover Sarkiffin regime is a joke. If I'm an SC fan I'm hoping they don't pull a fluke Muschamp year and prolong his stay.

I'm worried that Oregon will turn into the same type of situation where they're scared to hire outside of the culture group that helped then establish a great program, if we continue to see a dip with Helfrich. Runs like this don't seem to last longer than 10 years for any program, even powerhouses that can easily reload. Time is ripe for another Pac-12 program to supplant Stanford and Oregon, and that hasn't happened yet with those two programs showing signs of vulnerability the past two years.

I keep thinking we'll see a change at the top. Has to happen the next two or three years? ASU and UCLA have stalled a bunch. Interesting to see what they do moving forward.
