Halifax Maritimes

Established in 2058

The San Francisco Tanners moved to become the Halifax Maritimes to start the 2058 season. Although death threats continue to pour in, even from other GMs, the team has settled into their new life quite well. The players have responded to their new home with two very successful seasons thus far.

New Owner/GM Woo Lee took over the franchise in 2057. The franchise had won two Championships, 2053 and 2054, and was talented and ready for the 2057 season. The team finished 4[sup]th[/sup], and then rolled through the playoffs to the WS. The team played poorly in the World Series, spending most of their time in Dublin drinking and trawling the harbor taverns for whores. It seems Guinness and Jameson have ownership stakes in the Dublin Distillers, and they picked up the tab for any Halifax players. Well played Dublin. Although the franchise was popular and rooted in the WBL in San Francisco, its association with a show as dumb as Full House was too much to bear. Management considered just changing names and colors, but the stupidity of Saget and the stink of Stamos were too strong. It was not enough. A move was needed, and the sea was calling.

Woo Lee harkened back to his youth near the harbor town of New London, CT. His boyhood years on the New England coast had left an indelible impression, with its lighthouses, fishing ports, whaling ships, and yes, even submarine bases. Woo Lee recalled his childhood visits to the US Submarine Base in Groton, and he knew he needed to bring the team home. After scouring the rocky eastern coast for a suitable home, Halifax shone through like the oldest lighthouse in North America, which it has. What a time to be alive.

Halifax is an historical maritime community on the eastern seaboard of Canada, with a population of nearly 400,000. It was, and is, the major Canadian port and economic center on the eastern seaboard. It’s history is steeped in maritime culture with lighthouses, maritime museums, and a large shipyard. It is also full of cod eaters. What it lacked was a baseball team and a world class art collection. Woo Lee gave them both in 2058.

2058 Season in Review

89-73 .549 4[sup]th [/sup] -10T

Lost WS to Dublin
In a glorious start to this new chapter of the franchise, Halifax ended the season in the World Series. After a slow start to the season, that surely was due to the disruption of moving, the team lived up to its talent and roared through the second half, going from 7[sup]th[/sup] to 4[sup]th[/sup] place and making the playoffs. They finished 89-73 for .549 on the year. Their great second half play continued in the playoffs with defeats of False Bay and North Dakota to claim the SL Shampship and represent the South League for the World Series. They proved unseaworthy however, and like a ship without an anchor, they were swept by those land lovers in Las Vegas.

The 2058 team was largely the same as 2057 with a few new additions. All-Star 2B Luke Gwilt had already joined the team in a midseason 2057 trade, so the most heralded new arrival for 2058 was 1B Besim Inonu. The big Turk had a big season to accompany his hefty pricetag, but Gwilt was the star of 2058, slashing .324/.384/.544/.928 with 31HR and 100 RBI, gaining 7.0 WAR . SP Chris Antonissen had a career year with 20 wins and 3.27 ERA over 242 IP, good enough for 4.9 WAR. The offense was incredible, leading the league with 254 HR, and 5 players with 30+. It would have been 6 had Inonu not been injured and missed 10 games.

Every year Halifax strives to lead the league in lost Triangles, by assembling the best team on paper possible. This year was a resounding success, with a heretofore unknown value of -10! Ultimately, Halifax led the SL in Runs Per Game Difference, at 1.1. Our budget rose to 160m at the end of the year. Well done.

5.1 Runs Created - 4.0 Runs Given Up = + 1.1 Runs Per Game Difference

2059 Season in Review

98-64 .605 1[sup]st [/sup] -4T

Lost 1[sup]st[/sup] Round to Miami
The Maritimes had a terrific year, winning the South League with a 98-64 .605 record. Sadly this successful regular season was followed with a 1[sup]st[/sup] round loss in the playoffs, an ignominious defeat to some creature from Miami with a 4[sup]th[/sup] place squad full of bums. It’s the WBL, whadya gonna do? The loss of 3 starters, including the big bats of Inonu and Castillo, right before the playoffs doomed the team, right when they were poised to run through the playoffs and claim the championship for Halifax. Fuck Tony’s cat.

Overall the 2059 season had a lot of highlights. The pitching staff was spectacular, with SP leading the league in ERA at 3.18. The bullpen posted a solid 3[sup]rd [/sup]place ERA of 3.61, leading to an overall staff ERA of 3.37, best in the league. SP Holbrook took home the Outstanding Pitcher award for the year, wresting it away from NDR pitchers and the Dyson Sphere. Holbrook finished 18-5 2.54 over 213IP for a 4.9 WAR. He led the league in ERA, Wins, and WHIP (1.04). Perhaps most importantly, Halifax was able to increase their budget to 170 million.

Triangles were harder to lose this year, what with a 20m reduction in payroll from 2058, but Fax still managed a respectable -4. Ultimately, Halifax led the SL in Runs Per Game Difference, at 1.2.

Personnel changes before the 2059 year started include sending longtime team favorite Fred Smith and Ibrahim Munir to Moscow, in exchange for CL Valentine and freeing up money for IFA acquisitions in the offseason. During the year a trade was made to move CF Jorge Aranda back to Amsterdam for CF Menno Kienne. Aranda was valued, but injured too often, and an already fragile OF was risking the promise of a great season. Kiene has shined in CF since, with 2.9 WAR in half a season.

4.9 Runs Created - 3.7 Runs Given Up = + 1.2 Runs Per Game Difference

You consider non-championship seasons very successful?

2060 Season in Review

102-60 .617 2nd[sup] [/sup]+1T

Lost 1[sup]st[/sup] Round to Miami
2060 was a great year with a disappointing ending in Halifax, CN. Halifax had a team stacked with talent, and went on to win 102 games, finishing 2[sup]nd[/sup] in the South League (102-60 .617 +1 Triangles). The team started slowly, with a mediocre April and May, then turned into a machine, as they won 70% of their games from mid-June to the end of the season. As hot as they were, and as talented, they lost in the first round of the playoffs to some creature from Miami. For the second year in a row, the Mighty Maritimes ran ashore in Miami, falling prey to voodoo cat prayers and the two dollar hoes that litter that port-of-call. It is rumored that Miami has 80% of the two dollar bills in US circulation, thanks to Mayor McCheese.

Once again, pitching led the way. Halifax led the league in team ERA at 3.26 and along with a good defense, compiled a league leading 3.65 R/G Allowed. Holbrook had another stellar season, leading the league in ERA at 2.54, and winning his second consecutive Outstanding Pitching Wizard award. His 2.54 ERA tied the franchise record as well. Hitting was OK. With Karshev, Inonu, and Gwilt leading the team in hitting again, and Karshev leading in WAR with 7.0 from his Catcher position.

At the end of the 2060 season a lot of players were let go to free up room for IFA purchases, and to make room for younger players who are ready to play. Next year will look a lot different in Halifax. Notable losses included Inonu, who wanted a huge salary and had a career threatening injury last year.

4.65 R/G Created - 3.65 R/G Allowed = + 1.0 Runs Per Game Difference
