joshuahuskers' Long Beach State Athletics Dynasty

joshuahuskers

Utopia Football League
WELP I'm going to try another idea here. This dynasty will entail three sports for Long Beach State University, presented in chronological order: Football (NCAA 13), Men's Basketball (College Hoops 2k7), and Baseball (MVP 07).

There won't be much backstory, but things will follow in order. We will start in the fall of 2012, where Long Beach State will revive its football program (defunct for 20 years - since 1991), and join the Mountain West for football only. LBSU will remain in the Big West for all other sports. At some point down the road, it is possible that LBSU could change conferences for all sports, but that would be driven by MONEY (read: success in football).

At any rate, this will be in "real time." So we will start in August of 2012 with a brief football preview. Once we hit October, you will start to hear rumblings about the basketball season, and into November, basketball games will come between football games, etc.

I like this approach because it gives the feel of a true "offseason," and things like the layoff before a bowl game, time off between NSD, etc.

More coming soon.

Long Beach State 2012 Football Preview
August 15, 2012

It's finally here. Only twenty years later. In only ten days, Long Beach State will take the gridiron. A triumphant return after a twenty year, well, hiatus. The 49ers shut the program down after the 1991 season amidst financial difficulties, though the product on the field didn't help much. The 49ers were 199-183-4 in their 36 seasons in existence - pretty much the definition of mediocre, especially when you consider their lone bowl appearance - the 1970 Pasadena Bowl against Louisville - ended in a 24-24 tie.

Here's hoping for better luck this time around - and the 49ers will need plenty of luck. They are led back in the Division I football by relatively uknown coach Bryan Zektel. Zektel, previously the head coach and Orange County Christian high school, enters his first season with LBSU with literally zero division one (or even college for that matter) coaching experience. His ability to relate to players on this level, as well as recruit, will be crucial. By all means, OCC was is one of the best programs in the state winning four state titles in Zektel's seven seasons with the Lions, but FBS football is a whole different animal.

Zektel will mostly on transfers - mostly from FCS programs seeking to make it on the big stage, but also a handful of guys from other FBS programs - during his first season. Of course, we start at quarterback. Junior Marvin Tucker is the clear cut starter at quarterback he's an average passer by any standards, but his ability to scramble could help in situations where he must improvise - and improvise he will have to from time to time.

The good news for Tucker is that tailback Qunicy Ortiz - sophomore transfer from Georgia Tech of all places - is probably the best player on the 49ers team. Look for him to get the ball quite often during the season. He might be the only horse in the stable as well - there's not much depth in the backfield behind Ortiz. What he does have going for him, though, is an offensive line that should at least be decent. Nelson Bowling, a graduate transfer from Youngstown State in Ohio, might be the second best player on the team. He'll anchor an offensive line - including senior fellow Senior Tanner Pettit and Junior Brant Matthews - which might be the strongest overall position group on the 49ers roster. Look for an emphasis on the run game this year.

It's quantity over quality at wide receiver for The Beach. Despite nine players on scholarship at the position, none look to be anything special. Juniors Tre Lumpkin and William Clifford look to be the best of the crop - but true freshman Jevon Pleasant will see his share of targets and looks to have a bright future in Long Beach.

The defensive line will be a huge weakness for the team this season, lacking skills, experience, and depth. It's always a struggle when you're losing in the trenches - and lose in the trenches the 49ers will plenty this year, at least when they are on defense. On the bright side, the linebacking core looks promising. Senior Quincy Grant, a transfer from Colorado, will lead the way as probably the best player on the defense. He will be supported by two young players who show promise - sophomores Ben Fisher and Ralph McKinley.

In the secondary, the corners look to be a weakness, but Safeties Tim Nolan (sophomore) and Desi Clement (sophomore) show plenty of promise.

It should be an interesting ride this season - only one thing is for sure - LBSU fans WILL need to buckle their seat belts.

Football: 49ers Drop First Game Back
August 25, 2012

Long Beach State went on the road and lost in their first football game since 1991. The 49ers fought valiantly - and the defense actually played exceptionally well, but The Beach was bested by Louisville, 17-7.

Long Beach was in the game throughout the first half - trailing at the break only 3-0, on the back of an extremely strong defensive performance. In fact, the 49er defense gave up only 305 yards all afternoon. In the end, though, the superior Louisville squad proved too much.

The game did turn, however, on an interesting event. Trailing on 3-0 late in the third quarter, Long Beach coach Bryan Zektel elected to go for it on 4th & Inches from his own 33. The inside rushing play failed, Louisville took over, and scored a handful of plays later to go up 10-0.

The Long Beach offense was never quite in sync all day - managing just 152 total yards - partly because star running back Quincy Ortiz left the game with a sprained ankle (Ortiz is questionable for next week's game against New Mexico State, per Zektel). Ortiz carried 13 times for 37 yards before the injury, and Kenard Singletary filled in with 63 yards on 17 carries.

The passing game was not much better. Marvin Tucker completed just 10 of 22 passes for 96 yards, while spending most of the day on his back side - Tucker was sacked six times thanks to lack luster offensive line play. There was one silver lining, though. Tucker found receiver William Clifford for a 17 yard touchdown strike as time expired - Long Beach's only points of the day.

The 49ers return home next week to face New Mexico State in the grand opening of Long Beach Stadium.

Football Recruiting: Long Beach Nabs First 2013 Commit
August 27, 2012

Despite a 17-7 loss to Louisville on Saturday, it's not all bad news for the Long Beach State football program this week. Keith Jones, a 5'11" 160 pound defensive back from Claremont, CA committed to coach Zektel and the 49ers this morning. Jones, who announced his decision on twitter, said that the opportunity to see the field early is what stood out about Long Beach State. Jones note that Coach Zektel called to offer a scholarship on Sunday afternoon, and he committed on the spot.

Jones, a composite 2-star recruit, won't need to go far when he enrolls at LBSU next year - his home is only 42 miles from campus, which was also an important factor: "Family is very important to me, and it was a definite plus that Long Beach State is so close. This way, my family and friends can come watch me play any time."

insidethebeach.com lead recruiting analyst Mike Scornberg had this to say about Jones: "I think he's a little under the radar. He lacks some of the physical coverage skills you'd like to see out of a corner at this level, but where he excels is in his football IQ. He's very quick to recognize what the offense is doing out there, and that makes up for some of the talent gap, although he does have decent speed. He'll probably need a couple years of in the weight room before you see him become the player he truly can be."

Jones said he was considering Washington and UCLA as well, although Long Beach State was his only scholarship offer at the time of his commitment.

Football: 49ers Fall in Heart Breaker
September 1, 2012

In what might have been their best shot for a victory in 2012, the Long Beach State football team came up short, falling to New Mexico State, 16-12. For most of the day, it looked like the 49ers might pull it off. Long Beach led throughout - they took the early lead with a Quicy Ortiz 16 yard touchdown run on their first drive (the extra point would fail). The 49ers went back and forth with the Aggies, trading field goals in a defensive struggle throughout the game, but led throughout, thanks largely in part to a great defensive effort, holding New Mexico State to just nine points in their first four red zone trips.

But it would all be for not. After leading 12-6 at the break, Long Beach just couldn't get any offense going in the second half. The defense played great, but they could only hold back the Aggies for so long. The 49ers faced a 3rd and long with just under 2:00 to play, and Quincy Ortiz came up inches short on a screen pass. Long Beach would punt, and the levies would finally break on the ensuing NMSU drive, as the Aggies took the lead for good on a 25 yard touchdown pass to go up 16-12 with 1:13 to play.

Long Beach's last ditch efforts ended in an incompletion on 4th & 10 from around midfield, and the Aggies took over and were able to run out the clock.

The Long Beach State won the day for the 49ers again, giving up just 315 total yards, and only 32 on the ground. Offensively, Quincy Ortiz led the way for The Beach, carrying the ball 28 times for 129 yards and the one score, while also contributing 4 receptions for 33 yards. Tight End Curtis Mooney led Long Beach in receiving with 5 grabs for 47 yards. Marvin Tucker improved his performance from last week, going 16/27 for 149 yards, while being sacked only once.

Things don't get any easier next week for Long Beach, as the 49ers go on the road to play #5 Oklahoma. The Sooners beat UAB 48-14 today.

Football: 49ers Go Down in Norman
September 8, 2012

Long Beach State kept it respectable, but fell to #5 Oklahoma in Norman 24-10 on Saturday. Oklahoma led throughout, but Long Beach State was able to hold their own for most of the afternoon, and crossed midfield twice in the 4th quarter to try to cut it to a once score game. The 49ers were aided by two timely forced fumbles, but in the end, the fire power of Oklahoma was too much.

Oklahoma scored first, after a few traded punts, and went up 14-3 with a 7 yard touchdown run with 1:49 to play in the first half. Long Beach marched down the field and answered with a touchdown pass with just before the half to cut it to 14-10 at the break.

Although it was far from official, it seemed like the game was put out of reach early in the third quarter when Oklahoma converted a 4th & 2 from midfield, and scored a few plays later to go up 21-10. The Sooners would add a field goal late in the third, and all 49er comeback efforts failed in the final frame. In the end, the result was much better than anything Long Beach could have hoped for.

Quincy Ortiz carried 29 times for 91 yards for Long Beach, and Marvin Tucker went 16/33 for 168 with one touchdown and a pick. Oklahoma out-gained Long Beach 388-244.

The 49ers will be off next weeks before traveling to Corvallis, OR to face Oregon State.

Football: Long Beach Embarrassed in Corvallis
September 22, 2012

Long Beach State suffered its worst defeat of the season on Saturday, losing 24-0 to the Oregon State Beavers in Corvallis. Despite a somewhat productive defensive day, the 49ers were truly dominated in every aspect of the game, being out-gained 285-159. That is especially true when you consider 50 of Long Beach's yards came on the final play of the first half - garbage time.

Long Beach never got it going offensively - a recurring theme through the season's first four games. Quincy Ortiz was once again the 49ers' top offensive performer, carrying 20 times for 82 yards. Marvin Tucker was a miserable 11 of 21 for 93 yards and an interception.

The defense hung tough as they have all year, but couldn't keep up, especially in the second half as a 10-0 halftime deficit turned into a 24-0 defeat. Linebacker Ralph McKinley led The Beach defensively with 10 tackles, and corner Colin Ford added a pick.

Long Beach will stay on the road next week and open up Mountain West Conference play at Utah State.

Football Recruiting: Long Beach adds two for 2013 class
September 26, 2012

Nearly a month after receiving its first verbal for the 2013 class, the Long Beach State football program added two more on Wednesday in Quarterback James Rich of Redmond, OR and cornerback Patrick Hayes of Whittier, CA. Both are composite two-star prospects per 247sports.com.

Rich is a pro-style quarterback with a fairly strong arm, but some accuracy concerns, and was also considering Nevada and, ironically, Oregon State, who just beat the 49ers 24-0 on Saturday.

Patrick Hayes is a well balanced safety who was considering Hawaii and Arizona State. The 49ers are starting to bolster secondary depth in the class of 2013, as Hayes commits after fellow corner Keith Jones jumped on board back in August.

Football: Is It Basketball Season Yet? 49ers Lose in Maddening Fashion
September 29, 2012

That's the question many Long Beach state fans are asking after an 0-5 start to the football season. In their first ever Mountain West Conference game, the Long Beach State football team lost in maddening fashion.

The 49ers held tough all game, and were driving midway through the 4th quarter to try to cut a 13-3 deficit to a single score game. After driving 15 plays, and moving into the Aggie red-zone, quarterback Marvin Tucker saw a corner blitz, and threw a wheel route to the slot receiver. What he didn't see was a Utah State linebacker come up into the flat. Tucker's pass didn't get enough air under it, and it was picked off - and returned for a touchdown. 20-3, and the rest was history. To make things somewhat worse, Long Beach did manage to score on their final drive, finalizing the score at 20-10 with a touchdown that could have been for the win had the pick-six not occurred.

For Tucker's part, he went 11 of 20 for 112, with the one score and the one pick. Kenard Singletary led Long Beach in rushing, carrying 13 times for 77 yards after Quincy Ortiz left the game in the 4th quarter with a concussion. Long Beach out-gained Utah State 238-222.
