It was a successful return to college football for Orin Incandenza in his first season at his alma mater, as the Buffaloes won 11 games for the second time in school history and finished #4 in the country. Incandenza has been out of college football for four years after winning two straight titles at Texas A&M but quickly shook off the rust, with Colorado winning 10 straight games following a 1-2 start. The Buffs finished first in the country in total offense, scoring offense, and passing offense with first year starter Skyler Jackson taking home the Davey O'Brien award after throwing for 5,265 yards and 49 touchdowns. Jackson was surrounded by a talented skill corps, with Heisman finalist running back Leslie Houston rushing for 1,708 yards and a school record 26 touchdowns, Mackey Award winning tight end Derrick Reynolds hauling in 74 receptions for 1037 yards and a school record 13 touchdowns, and receivers Cornell Gore and Josh Anderson combining for nearly 2,500 yards and Gore catching a school record 13 touchdown passes. On the other side of the ball, Colorado struggled, but performed well in the most important section of the field, finishing 32nd in red zone defense. The front seven was also effective at slowing down opposing rushers, finishing 6th in rushing defense. The Buffs will have high hopes for 2021 as they return numerous starters on both sides of the ball and bring in players from a top 15 recruiting class.

The Buffaloes entered the 2022 season with fairly high expectations and ended up shattering them, posting a school record 14 wins en route to an unbeaten season, a Big 12 championship, and a national title. Colorado was fueled by the greatest offense in college football history, as the unit shattered NCAA marks in total offense, yards per game, scoring offense, and points per game, and became the first offense to have a 5,000 yard quarterback, two 1,000 yard rushers, and two 1,000 yard receivers. Freshman quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Gates became the first player to amass 5,000 yards passing and 1,000 yards rushing, and was aided by a strong supporting cast, including running back Shawn Moss, who rushed for over 1,800 yards, and a strong receiving corps, led by 1,000 yard receivers Casey Rutledge and Kevin Montgomery. On the other side of the ball, a thin secondary was beleaguered all season, but the front seven, which contained Bednarik Award Casey Abrams and three other All-Americans, helped create a dominant run defense, a top ten red zone unit, and an aggressive attitude, enabling them to force 33 turnovers, good for third in the country. In the end, it was a unit that only needed to not be historically porous, thanks to an offense whose season low game output was 44 points. Following the season, Coach Orin Incandenza, who previously won back to back titles with Texas A&M, announced his retirement, stating that he had achieved his goal of bringing another title to his alma mater. The 2022 Colorado Buffaloes, who finished the season with six wins over top 25 teams, and three over top 10 teams, and 14 All-Americans, will undoubtably go down as one of the greatest teams in NCAA history.
