I think it's a sidegrade for the Rams, since McVay is really good and might get the best out of whatever remains of Pat, but the Lions got the 1sts out of it so they probably come out ahead. GOOF will be terrible with McVay's guidance being replaced by Jim Tomsula or whoever the new Lions OC is.

It's about possible future harm. If they don't defend their trademark at every reasonable opportunity, then someone can later come along and point to their lack of defense as evidence of them giving up said trademark.

It doesn't matter. If someone can prove that the NFL isn't defending their trademark, then that someone can trademark it themselves and then prevent the NFL from using the name in the same way that the NFL prevents others from using the name right now.
